Highs and Lows

A haiku

I seem to thrive in Life’s highs and lows; feeling my Way through life’s journey.

Who else is a deep feeler, feeling your way through life, using your emotions as a compass of sorts to navigate life? Over the years I have recognized that I am emotionally intense — for good and for bad.

I seem to thrive on the highs or the lows of life; when I am really happy and kicking ass in life, or when I am really, really low and in despair. Of course, I don’t wish for the latter, nor do I spend too much time there, but when life knocks me down, I allow myself to fall and I connect with myself and my pain in deep, meaningful ways.

It is in the in-betweens that I feel bored.

Emotional intensity, they say, “is both a blessing and a curse,” for those of us who feel deeply feel it all deeply — from joy to pain and all the in-betweens, and with this comes great responsibility to self-regulate and to self-care.

We must learn how to regulate our strong emotions or reactions to those emotions, so that they do not consume us or drive us, for feelings pass. We must learn to be rooted in our values, in the core of who we are and want to be, and allow this to guide us forward in life.

We must learn to self-care; to know what we can handle and what is too much, to give ourselves time-outs when we need them, to soothe and hold ourselves and our truths, and love ourselves as we are…even when we are ‘too much’ for others.

We must learn to channel our emotions appropriately. As I always tell my children; all feelings are ok and acceptable as long as we express them in a healthy manner. When we feel really, really, angry we can run, or write, or breathe. When we feel really, really, sad we can cry, write, or curl up with a blanket — giving ourselves sacred time to heal. When we feel great joy we can indulge in healthy ways; dance, write, cook, sing, play! When we feel anxious we can exercise, do yoga or meditation, journal, or talk to a trusted friend.

When we feel overwhelmed by the world — we can turn off the news, put down social media, and get out into nature.

Whatever works, we must find ways to navigate this world in a way that celebrates and honors our emotions, and ourselves, as we are. Yes, I may feel great pain at times, but I also feel joy to its fullest possible capacity, and I wouldn’t want it any other way!
