Highest Self
a poem about our potential at all times, and my hope for us at all times

My whole life I guess
I have been waiting for the other shoe to drop, whatever that means.
There’s a sense of anxiety, or rather, just deep sadness, about what is around the corner this time, what people have done to
themselves this time, what we have done to each other this time,….personal, interpersonal, local, national, global, — the connections have always overwhelmed my senses with such feelings — we do not do the best we can for our spirits, we do not do the best we can for each other, we buy into the systems and we opt for soullessness over soul —
and yet also, wishing, and working, and doing all that I can think to do to make a better world, a better life, to show the better side;
having virtues, having values, having high standards, having deep spiritual belief
expecting the best holding myself and others in my life accountable to standards rooted in basic Goodness
Believing, praying, holding space for the hope and the vision
That people can choose to be the highest calling of their authentic self
That I can choose to be the highest calling of my authentic self
That we don’t have to wait and anticipate the worst in every situation
That we can change the world by embracing the values of true kindness, true compassion, true meaningful relationships, true trust, true empathy, and true right action in our behaviors, -
I see the connections between self and society, between identity and culture
If we can lift up our spirits, we can lift up each other,
We can save what’s left of it all, of ourselves, of each other
and
We can still shine through
