High school MAGA racists taunting Indigenous people tells me this…
Racism will never end.

Recently some boneheaded MAGA students from Kentucky’s Covington High School thought it was a great idea to taunt an elderly Native American man participating in the Indigenous Peoples March. Nathan Phillips, Omaha Elder and Vietnam War vet, can be seen singing and beating a drum as a white supremacist teenager smiles mockingly at him while other students yell and jeer behind him. So this makes us great, right?
Ironically these racists were in Washington D.C. to participate in the March for Life anti-abortion event. I for one think they’re a proof that abortion should be legal.
See, these little assholes haven’t come across the right ones yet. And I can tell you that my mama didn’t raise me to turn the other cheek. Had that kid stepped to me or mine like that, he would have caught hands, knuckles and feet. Do I care that they’re teenagers? No. They were a mob of racists trying to incite a riot. And if their parents raised them to treat non-white people like this, then we have every right to return the favor. An ass beating may have been just the ticket for them.
I’m furious for the Indigenous people who participated in this march, which was the first of its kind. Now this historic event will forever be marred by these racist jerks. I would ask where their parents were, but their parents are probably thrilled. They raised their children in their own racist image, and they couldn’t be prouder.
So forgive us people of color when we say racism WILL. NEVER. END. This is the next generation, and they’re just as racist as the previous ones. Make America Great, my ass. Make America White, Privileged and Racist as usual. I’m sick of this. This is why I’m so hard on allies when they tell me they’re uncomfortable talking to the racists in their lives. This is the kind of harm that happens when racists aren’t confronted. These are the children they raise, and these are the values they instill in them.
Every white person should be up in arms about this. Have any parents who know the kids in the video visited the high school and insisted they be expelled? Have they confronted any of their parents about this? Have they let both the parents and the school know they in no way support racism and white supremacy in their schools or in their community?
I’m not holding my breath. White people love to keep quiet about racism. They’re complicit because they just don’t care. As for the school? They’re investigating and say some of the students might be expelled. Might be expelled. In what world is this not so egregious, that any students who participated in this behavior wouldn’t be kicked out?
If we’re talking about patriots, no American is more patriotic than Nathan Phillips. He served this country in the Vietnam War and is an Indigenous elder. This man deserves every respect from every person in this country. His life hasn’t been easy, and to see the same behavior revisited upon him again that he probably experienced numerous times over his life must have been disheartening for him. Mr. Phillips believes we need to come together. And we do.
But how? I don’t see it ever happening. I don’t see white people truly wanting to come to the table with arms and minds open willing to make real change for everyone. White supremacy is a helluva a drug. It’s comfortable. It’s enticing.
Anti-racism work is none of these things. It’s hard. It’s painful. Tiring. It’s just plain awful. That’s how black and brown people feel about it. But we do it. What allies are willing to go through this much pain and sorrow for us? Where are they?
Because every time I look up, they’re nowhere to be seen.
