Fun Poetry Prompt: something with the initials HR
Hibiscus Rosa-sinensis
hibiscus haiku
summer or autumn evergreen with glossy leaves brilliant red flowers
Thank you to Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) for the fun prompt: something with the initials HR. As I sat reflecting on this prompt, I found myself gazing at a hibiscus shrub in the yard eagerly waiting for summer, hence the attempt.
Briefly, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (H.R.) flowers were first described in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus. While the specific epithet rosa-sinensis literally means “rose of China,” they are not in fact related to the real roses. Besides being of significant ornamental value, H.R. flowers are edible and are used in hair care and shoe shine products. Fun fact: H.R. flowers can be used as a pH indicator — the flower turns acidic solutions to a dark pink or magenta color and basic solutions to green.
