Hi! I am Vidya Sury, Collecting Smiles

Welcome to my profile

After more than a decade in the corporate world in sales/marketing/training, I took off my 4-inch heels, dumped my expensive handbags, donated my wardrobe of 300+ sarees, quit my corporate career, and got married to my soulmate, and moved to his city.

Of course, I imagined I would be back at work after a short sabbatical, but the most wonderful thing happened to me.

I became a mom. And naturally, much as I enjoyed my career, I preferred to be with him over getting back into the rat race of the daily commute and being away half the month on work. I didn’t fancy getting updates about my son.

Best decision ever.

When I decided to return to work, the job market did not cooperate and I decided to be my own boss as a freelance writer. Thanks to my family and friends always telling me I was a good writer, I actually believed it. Sent out feelers, connected with clients and the rest is history.

I’ve now been a freelance writer, manuscript editor, and business blogger since 2003, the same year I started my first blog.

I now manage six successful blogs of my own. During my blogging journey, I’ve been awarded many accolades, co-authored books whose proceeds go to charity, and been interviewed several times, besides enjoying being an influencer.

More about my journey into becoming a freelance writer here.

What am I doing on Medium?

Besides self-publishing and writing for many wonderful publications, I have the privilege of being an editor with the following publications: ILLUMINATION, ILLUMINATION’S MIRROR, Illumination Gaming, ILLUMINATION Book Chapters, Illumination Videos and Podcasts, Lampshade of Illumination, The Shortform, Six Word Photo Story Challenge, ’84 Internationale, Badform, The Community Building Movement, The Daily Cuppa Grande, Dancing Elephants Press and Parasol Publications’ The Narrative Arc and In For A Penny.

I also started my own publication Vidya Sury Collecting Smiles.

I enjoy the interaction, the engagement, and the connections. I love to write.

And of course, the 7x Top Writer tags feel good too!

What I write about

I enjoy writing about various topics including mindfulness, parenting, travel, books, self-care, wellness, and diabetes. I especially love writing short form posts and photo posts.

Beginning November, I started writing about Diabetes Awareness and will continue to do so.

I contribute to The Daily Cuppa twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays.

I write to collect smiles and donate to charity. My mission is to better the lives of underprivileged children.

When I am not working, I enjoy playing with my dust bunnies and planning ways to show my diabetes who’s boss.

I love hanging out with children. I love coffee, travel, music, sketching, photography, cooking, DIY (I can fix most things around the house — I am the resident amateur carpenter-plumber-odd job woman rolled into one), sewing, books — and enjoy tinkering with just about anything.

I believe housework is therapeutic. I crank up the music and pretend to be a rockstar with my mop or broomstick.

I speak seven languages and read at least 3 books simultaneously.

I believe in staying fit and working out thrice a week, besides walking. Well, exercise is a non-negotiable for diabetics.

I believe that there is a special place in hell for women who won’t help other women and that kindness is the only way to deal with others.

I am open to collaboration

I welcome writing/editing/blogging assignments. Feel free to get in touch with me.
