Hey You, THINK Before Speaking!
An Acronym to Keep In Mind for the Rest of Your Life
When it comes to our words, we have to be extra careful.
Just a slip of a tongue when we’re emotionally charged might inflict a wound on others that take a long time to heal! 👅
Since we won’t be able to take our words back, we should THINK before speaking.
It is an acronym that’s great to fall back on wherever you are! 💬
Here’s what the THINK acronym is about.
Before speaking, ask yourself: Is what you are about to say…
True? 😄
We are bound to hurt people by spreading rumours and gossiping about others. Worse, we could even cause tensions in friendships and relationships!
Only speak what is true to avoid causing unnecessary hurt and confusion!
Helpful? 🤓
This is a good opportunity for me to share the 10 seconds rule:
If someone can’t fix their appearance (face, height, weight, hair colour, etc.) in 10 seconds, don’t point it out!
It will only lead to awkwardness and embarrassment for the other party.
Inspiring? 😎
No, we don’t have to be giving a motivational speech every time we talk to our friends.
But our choice of words could very well give someone the courage and strength they need to make a decision and push on in their lives!
Necessary? 🤔
Blurting out the first thought that comes to our minds is oftentimes an unwise decision because it may very well be redundant speech.
Other times though, we have to force ourselves to have the tough but necessary conversations with our loved ones, friends, and family.
Because even acquaintances can have easy and light-hearted conversations with one another!
Kind? 😊
Will our words cause the other party to feel more positive and confident about themselves?
Or will it have the opposite effect?
While these “rules” are not set in stone, they are definitely great guidelines to live by.
When uncertain about whether to say something or not, simply ask yourself:
How would you feel if someone were to say the exact same words to you?
By being sensitive and mindful of our words, we not only steer clear of misunderstandings and upsetting others, but we also uplift and encourage others through our words.
And that is pretty awesome! 💯
