Hey Writers, Let’s Give Back

A challenge to use your words in a different way

***All earnings from this article will be donated to the World Central Kitchen.

I care deeply for people in need, but as a writer, I don’t always have the extra money to donate to causes that are close to my heart. My guess is that there are some other writers here who might be in the same boat.

While I may not have a lot of extra cash to give away, I do have my time and talent. And no, I don’t (yet) have billions of bucks to create my own foundation, but gosh darn it, I can write!

So, I have a question: If you could choose to donate the earnings from one or some of your stories to a charity of your choosing, would you do it?

The Pledge

Every cent I earn from this story will be donated to the World Central Kitchen at the end of each calendar month. During the Covid-19 crisis, the World Central Kitchen has been providing 250,000 fresh meals each day to those without access to food and has been working to keep restaurant doors open during these difficult times. The work this group is doing means a lot to me and I’m excited to support them, even if it is in a small way, with this article.

(I will add screenshots of earnings and my donation receipt to my monthly updates on the first of every month so you can see how much money was raised.)

Join Me

I believe that we can make a difference in the world with our words and I invite you to join me. Choose a worthy cause and make a pledge to donate your earnings from one (or more) of your stories to that cause. You may not think it is much — you may only make 23 cents on your story. But there are thousands and thousands of writers on this platform. And every little bit helps.

If you would like to join this initiative, I also encourage you to let others know about it. Leave your intention to give back in the comments along with your charity of choice and tag three other authors to spread the word (remember — I’m not making money off of this article — World Central Kitchen is).

Here’s how to join what I’m calling WRITING IT FORWARD:

  • Choose a cause you believe in.
  • Leave a comment here with your intention to write an article and donate your earnings to supporting your cause.
  • Write a fantastic story and make sure to leave a note at the bottom that you plan to donate your earnings.
  • Add “Writing it Forward” as one of your five tags on your article.
  • Challenge two or three other authors to write their own articles to raise funds and awareness for causes close to their hearts. The more writers we can recruit, the larger the difference we can make in our communities and in the world.
  • Keep your promise at the end of the month and make your donation to support your charity.

Together, we can make a difference in this world with our thoughts and our words. I encourage you to join me. Let’s start “Writing It Forward” together.

I challenge Stephanie Thurrott, Tina L. Smith, Laetitia Phan, and Darius Foroux.
