Hertogenbosch: Design Museum — Part II
Pursuing interest despite achieving undesired fame.

Last time, I visited the exhibition of the Radical Art movement of Austria in the Design Museum (Hertogenbosch: Design Museum- Part I). But, this time I visited the artistic work of Meret Oppenheim. The entire hall was illuminated with white lights and appeared very polished.
As compared to the other exhibition of the Radical art movement, the space felt quite open. This is because there was only a couple of partition wall in the entire hall. So, I wandered around the hall to gain more information about Meret Oppenheim. To achieve more clarity on the texts displayed on the wall, I spoke to the museum personnel.
Meret Oppenheim was a German-born artist who kept searching for artistic and personal independence at an early stage of life. Soon, she developed herself as a surreal artist. Later, she won international fame for the object (fur-covered cup and saucer) at the Exposition surrealiste d’objects. Thereafter, the museum of Modern Art in New York acquired the object which gave her a lot of worldwide fame.

But, she didn’t feel happy about it because she felt that her art was just reduced to the fur cup. She struggled for 18 years because the public often expected surrealism art from her. She felt that her artistic scope was getting limited. But, in 1954, she returned to Switzerland with renewed vigor for different forms of art. She always wanted to pursue her future endeavors in these forms of art. Thus, this period is marked with Oppenheim making a mark in other forms of art which include paintings, poems, jewelry designs, and sculptures. She even raised the issue of women’s equality in art.
Her resolution to set aside public expectations and chase her own dreams is acknowledged with high respect in the current era.
I could notice people appear mesmerized while looking at the jewelry designs. Some of her famous jewelry includes the bone necklace, a belt of two arms, and a golden ring with a sugar cube (as shown in the photo above).
After getting to know about Meret Oppenheim, I sat down at a place in the hall and imagined. As I turned my eyes around the hall, it appeared very illuminated. But now I felt a more powerful spark of optimism oozing out from the work of Oppenheim.

All these years, I knew that a failure may deter a person from trying further his/her interest. But, looking at Oppenheim, a success in another field can also deter a person from trying further in the field where he/she wants to make a mark. Because, the person will try to succumb to the public pressure. And, he/she will continue working in that field of success rather than their self interest.
It somehow also gives rise to the idea that there will be always distractions when we chase our dreams. These distractions can be undesired fame and success too. As a person, we have to stay motivated and disciplined on our own path till the end.
