Here’s Why ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Is A Movie You MUST Watch

Top Gun is finally back! Top Gun: Maverick was supposed to be released on 12 July 2019. Yeah, you read that right… 2019! Due to COVID-19, the release of the film had been delayed, and it’s been 3 years since the first announcement of the movie.
It is official now! Top Gun: Maverick will be on the big screen from 27 May 2022 onwards.
Top Gun: Maverick Synopsis
After graduating from Top Gun, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell has been dodging the advancement in rank so that he could continue to fly jets in the Navy. His career comes to a full circle as Maverick finds himself back in Top Gun more than 30 years later. This time, he is in charge of training a new squadron of fighter pilots where he will confront his past.
Must You Watch 1986 Top Gun Before Watching Top Gun: Maverick?
Before I tell you why you must watch the upcoming Top Gun movie, I thought I would answer the question of whether it is necessary to watch the classic first.
The short answer is no. The 1986 Top Gun movie merely provides some context of how Maverick became an instructor and the past that he must confront when teaching the new batch of fighter pilots.
Nonetheless, I’m not saying you should not watch it. After all, it is still a classic:
- Movies back in 1986 did not rely heavily on CGI because it was not yet advanced, so those dogfights between the US and the Russian fighter jets were shot in real-time. Cool right?
- Iconic phrases were born out of this movie, such as “I feel the need… the need for speed!”. There are also other iconic phrases by many different characters. Watch it for yourself!
- You can’t forget the music used in the movie. The soundtrack used in Top Gun was a huge success. I think the most iconic music for me would be “Highway to the Danger Zone”, but of course, there are other music that were great as well.
Why You MUST Watch Top Gun: Maverick
So… Paramount Pictures just released the new official trailer for Top Gun: Maverick. Watch it first before you read further:
Isn’t the trailer cool? Tom Cruise went from being a Top Gun trainee in the first movie to a trainer in the sequel.
Anyways, the trailer is filled with action and thrill. Most importantly, it brought some form of suspense. It also features cool aerial footage and manoeuvres. Those are some high-tech filming! Besides, Tom Cruise himself assured his fans that Top Gun: Maverick will not be relying on CGI and focuses on the actual jets instead. Actor Jon Hamm also mentioned that the movie is being recorded in 6K, and that is really high quality. We shall see though, how the actual movie plays out when it is released.
Some of you may argue that it is only the trailer, well… you are not wrong. But having watched Top Gun, I am confident that Top Gun: Maverick will be of quality as well, just like how its trailer portrayed it to be.
Furthermore, Jerry Bruckheimer will be co-producing this film as well. He was the one who produced the first Top Gun movie alongside the late Don Simpson. The OG’s producing the sequel, it’ll be a banger… I hope!
Not only the producer is the OG, but some of the actors are also too! We will see the return of Val Kilmer, who played as Iceman in the first movie, and of course, Tom Cruise!
Parting Words
To be honest, I wasn’t really excited about the movie when the trailer of it first came out in 2019. I did not even know that the 1986 Top Gun movie existed before I watched the trailer. Nonetheless, I was intrigued by the trailer. I got curious about the movie, so I went to watch Top Gun…
Lo and behold, I fell in love with the movie, and now I can’t wait to watch the sequel! Those who have yet to watch the first one, I strongly suggest you do so, and maybe you will get as excited as me for the second one.
Of course, while I put in lots of good words for the sequel of Top Gun, I can’t guarantee that it will be as good as the classic. We shall see… watch it for yourself in the cinemas when it is released on 27 May 2022 to decide!
