Summary

Attendees of Primavera Sound 2022 in Barcelona faced significant logistical issues, prompting comparisons to the infamous Fyre Festival.

Abstract

Primavera Sound 2022, which returned after a three-year pandemic hiatus, was met with widespread criticism from attendees due to logistical problems such as long drink queues, lack of water, overcrowding, security issues, and inadequate transport options. The festival, known for its diverse lineup featuring acts like Idles, Mabel, and Jorja Smith, failed to meet expectations, with many attendees missing performances and facing safety concerns. Despite the festival's efforts to address the issues, the problems persisted, leading to a negative experience for some, reminiscent of the Fyre Festival debacle.

Opinions

  • Attendees expressed dissatisfaction with absurdly long bar queues and slow service, which impacted their ability to stay hydrated and enjoy performances.
  • There were reports of alleged brutality by festival security, with attendees experiencing violence for minor offenses.
  • Concerns were raised about the lack of safety barriers and the restriction of a major bridge to VIP guests, creating dangerous crowd bottlenecks.
  • Festival-goers were disappointed after being turned away from venues for city gigs, despite arriving hours in advance.
  • Revelers faced significant difficulties in finding transportation home, with many having to walk long distances late at night.
  • Despite the issues, some attendees considered the inconveniences as typical for festivals and still enjoyed their overall experience.
  • The festival organizers acknowledged the problems with bar services and apologized, promising to improve the situation for the remaining days.

Here’s why people are comparing Primavera Sound 2022 to Fyre Festival

Following a three-year break due to the pandemic, Primavera Sound returned to Barcelona’s Parc Del Forum last week. Punters gathered from all over the UK and Europe, looking forward to a long-anticipated weekend of good tunes, beautiful Spanish weather, and cheap pints.

Spanning over two weekends, the festival is known for its diverse lineups. This year’s edition featured such acts as Idles, Mabel, Charli XCX, Dream Catcher, and Jorja Smith.

As the first day got underway, however, attendees soon started to notice major issues with the festival’s logistics, taking to social media to voice their concerns. Punters raised criticism over a lack of availability of water, over-crowding, and struggle to find transport home. Here’s the lowdown of what’s happened so far.

Drink queues

Long queues for bars are a common phenomenon at festivals worldwide. However, these becomes a major issue when people start missing entire sets in pursuit of a bottle of water. That is exactly what happened at Primavera Sound this week, with attendees experiencing absurdly lengthy lines and slow service. Considering bottled water was sold from the same outlets as alcoholic drinks, many struggled to stay hydrated in the parching Barcelona heat.

Intimidating security

Several Twitter users shared stories of being subject to alleged brutality at the hands of festival security. Reports emerged of attendees experiencing violence for minor offences such as trying to take bottled water into the festival grounds.

Crowd mayhem

A lack of mid-crowd safety barriers and the restriction of a major bridge crossing to VIP guests only caused a number of concerning bottlenecks within crowds. With the recent events which unfolded at Astroworld 2021 fresh on people’s minds, attendees were rightly fearful.

Fans being turned away from venues

One of the main draws of Primavera Sound is a series of gigs that take place in the city between the two main festival weekends. Festival wristband holders have the opportunity to attend these shows which are dotted across Barcelona in music venues of varying sizes. Many fans turned up to these shows hours in advance just to find out that the venue was already full, much to their disappointment.

Lack of transport home

In another logistical oversight, upon leaving the festival grounds, revelers were left stranded without transport back to their accommodation. Several reports emerged of tourists walking hours through the city at night just to make it home.

My Experience

I was lucky to attend Weekend One of this year’s edition, and overall, I had a great experience. The value of the location of the festival can not be understated. Days spent wandering the beautiful streets of Barcelona make the perfect warm-up to each day in the Forum.

Did I experience long bar queues? Yes. I also felt the grounds were over-capacity. Every set seemed to draw a much bigger crowd than bands of their size normally would. Transport home was a nightmare. In my experience, these factors are not uncommon at festivals, however. I see them more as an inconvenience than a dire burden.

I cannot however discount the experiences of others who had a truly bad time this year. The concerns about overcrowding and lack of crushing-prevention measures combined with a lack of water are not something we should be seeing at a festival in 2022 as

Early last week, Primavera Sound’s organisers Tweeted the following statement: “Today marks the second day of Primavera Sound. We are aware of the problems in the bar services yesterday and we apologise for them. We are working tirelessly to solve them so that we can all enjoy the coming days as we deserve. See you this afternoon”. However, the festival’s official social media channels remain ridden with ongoing concerns from current attendees.

Here’s hoping Weekend Two attendees have a much more enjoyable experience!
