Here’s the Best Writing Advice I Received This Past Weekend

It really put my writing career into perspective

As a human, I eat up advice from other humans like it’s going out of style. And why wouldn’t I?

Free advice is free advice. I’m not passing it up.

This past weekend, some of the best writing advice ever given to me came when least expected. Here’s what happened:

I Can’t Stop Thinking About the Weekend

At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where I am currently a senior, I serve as a senior columnist for the student newspaper, The Daily Illini. Last weekend, we celebrated the 150th anniversary of the publication.

Many current staff members mingled with alumni all night long. I did so too, including with Will Leitch, a sportswriter for Medium, MLB, and other publications. I asked him for advice on writing.

He said:

“Keep making shit. No matter what, keep making shit. The more you write, the better you will be and the more content you will have.”

Damn, that hit me like a ton of bricks.

The more I thought about it, the more it made sense.

Content Is Everything to a Writer

If you want to be a successful writer, having great content is mandatory. However, say it’s only one great article instead of 100. Your audience won’t have any other pieces to read from you.

But if you have a wide variety of content, your readers will see it after reading one of your articles and read more if they liked it. This is the beauty of Medium. Because we have so much content, Medium promotes it after one of our pieces.

Therefore, it’s best if we just keep writing and making content. The more we have, the better chance we have of being read and the more money we will earn too.

I’ve written over 500 pieces so far in the last year since my time on the platform. I’ve learned that more content is better than less content.

Closing Thoughts

Not only did I receive great writing advice from a professional in the field but also an Illinois alum. I’m proud we already share so many wonderful traits.

From here on out, I will keep making content no matter what. It’ll be one of the key factors in my success as a writer.

And that’s what you should do too. Keep making content as much and as long as you can. You won’t regret it.
