Here’s One Reason You Can Tip Me On Medium. (I Don’t Need It, But They Do)
I have other plans to monetize my content and tipping isn’t one of them. Your love and support are enough.
Yesterday, we celebrated our 75th Independence Day.
We hoisted our tricolour flag, paid tribute to our freedom fighters, appreciated the developments we have made, and looked forward to how we can make progress in the coming years.
As a nation, India has still got a lot of problems to solve, as does any other nation. One among many is food security and providing proper education to children of disadvantaged families.
I think it’s high time we address concerns like these not only for a country but the whole world. Let’s really make it a better place. But how? Here’s my small step.
New Medium feature: Tipping
It’s been a couple of weeks since Medium launched its new tipping feature.
It’s exciting as we writers get an additional way to support our writing journey. Readers who love our writing and want to support us can tip directly through platforms like Kofi or PayPal.
I was so excited and decided to create a brand new Kofi landing page so that I can receive tips. Or login to my Paypal and see how it works if linked directly.
I use one of my grandpa’s bank accounts for all my transactions. And because I live ~1,000 km away from home, I have that account’s ATM and Paytm (wow, that rhymes!)
A long time ago, I made a PayPal account. As it was my grandfather’s account and all documentation was perfectly in place, I didn’t have to do much to put these things in place (apart from adding an email, obviously).
I found doing the Stripe thing very complicated, so I dropped that.
After I found out I was not eligible for the Medium Partner Program because I am from India, I thought, what’s the use of that anyway?
Fast-forward a year and Medium has introduced tipping. The moment I was about to link my PayPal, I noticed something impressive.
And it striked me that I can do something different.

Can I link to an organization too? And I had one in mind already.
Why do I want to link to an organisation (and not my own Paypal)?
The organisation I am talking about is Akshaya Patra.
It is an NGO based in Bengaluru, India that strives to eliminate classroom hunger by implementing the Mid-Day Meal Scheme in the government school.
Apart from that, it also has many initiatives to counter malnutrition and provide education to socio-economically disadvantaged children.
I have heard of this foundation a lot of times.
Did you know your $20 can feed a child for an entire year?
Yes, an entire year. You can estimate how much of an impact even a couple of your dollars can make.
This is possible because of the scale they are working on. I don’t think I can explain that any better than in this video (5 million+ views). Just take a tour:
