Here’s how you can follow your passion more effectively.

The №1 insight keeping you from excelling in your passion

Everyone has a passion. I’m sure you do too. A strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something. It can be anything — music, travel, science, astronomy, programming, sketching you name it.

You might be pursuing your ‘dream job’ right now. You may intend to follow it in the future. Or unfortunately, you’ve given up on it already.

Considering the latter is not the case, today I want to share an insight into how you can follow your passion more effectively.

Here’s the insight: DO NOT put pressure on your passion to earn you money.

Hold up. Before you take an exit, let me explain why.

The Money Problem:

Why do we want to earn money? Because it is crucial for survival. Having money guarantees a life of material fulfilment. It gives you an opportunity to take care of your family and gives you the flexibility to take more risks in life.

But when you chase ONLY money, you are not focused on the impact of your work. You focus on your compensation. You equate your happiness, fulfilment and worthiness with your paycheque. And you’ve probably heard why that’s not a good idea. If not, here you go:

  • Money is never ‘enough’. The financial goalpost keeps moving.
  • It strips away the fun from life, making you conscious about your bank balance.
  • It is the most proverbial tool of comparison, detrimental to personal growth.
  • It may force you to do the things you hate.
  • It may get you to hate the things you once loved.

The Beauty of Passion:

Do you know why you cherish their passion? Because it provides you freedom of choice. It does not hold you back rather it lets your innermost being flourish.

There’s no room for pretence or facade. It’s a pure expression of your values. That’s what makes passion so beautiful. The liberation you feel by wholeheartedly, and selflessly following your passion is unmatched!

When you put the pressure of monetization on your passion, you no longer value the work you put into your passion. You inadvertently get detached from the euphoria you would have felt otherwise, by selflessly following your passion.

Every project you complete and every milestone you achieve will become a sign of your financial prowess. And there’s a reason for this. The thought of having more money constantly surrounds you. Your family, friends, work colleagues everyone has the same need — MONEY. Since you are constantly surrounded by the “money chatter”, it is hard to get your mind off of it.

Your actual passion will be in the rear-view mirror. You might no longer strive to improve your work. Rather you would focus on the kind of work that will make you handsome bucks. Even if you’d like to take up a project that resonates with your innate desires and emotions, the final decision to pick up the project will depend on its monetary benefits.

Such is the hold of money on human psychology. We are slaves to our needs.

DO NOT put pressure on your passion to earn you money.

Final Thoughts:

Before we conclude, I want to thank my friend Zevier for this insight about passion. He’s one of the best thinkers I’ve known personally.

I urge you to never put the pressure of monetization on your passion. Follow it for the satisfaction it provides, for the gratification it promises. Do not get swayed by the shackles of the dollar.

I don’t mean to go broke. There are other ways you can fulfil your needs. But make sure it is sustainable.

Here’s a guide by Ethan Steele to streamline your finances:

Even if you want to monetize your passion, let it be a side effect of allowing it to flourish. If you’re lucky enough, you won’t have to work for the rest of your life.

Elevate your life by the beauty of your passion. Find a purpose and stick to it. Never settle. Keep enriching your craft. Your passion is not just work. It reflects your innate desires and emotions. It helps you escape the confinements of your conceptual reality. It forces you to reflect on your life choices. It helps you be present and live life, not zoom through it.

Not every passion you have needs to make you big bucks. Passion is a hobby. And hobbies are therapy. Don’t skip therapy, yeah?
