What is SEO in 10 Seconds?

You’ve heard of SEO, right? It stands for Search Engine Optimization. If your SEO is updated properly, you can gain increase the visibility on your work. It can be applied on a website, YouTube videos, and also your stories on Medium!

When SEO is applied effectively, search engines will display your work prominently and encourage more exposure. How great!

How To Update SEO On Your Medium Stories

Go to one of your stories and click the … in the corner.
Click Story settings.

3. From the menu on the left hand side, click “SEO Settings”.

You’ll be brought to the SEO section for your story! Here is where you can enter keywords and update your SEO title and SEO description. Medium provides a little blurb on what to fill in and the character limits for each option.

All the information you use here shows up on search engine results pages.

Looking at my SEO settings below, it looks like I could probably update my SEO description for this particular story. The current description is long and doesn’t include many good keywords.

Tips on SEO

Use a keyword research tool to find optimal keywords for your story.
Use high-ranking keywords in your SEO title and description.
Use keywords in the body of your text.
Make sure the keywords are naturally part of your story. Don’t stuff keywords everywhere for the sake of SEO.
Be simple and concise.
Avoid clickbait titles.
