Here’s How Much Medium Paid Me for an Article With 60,000 Views
A detailed breakdown on how much Medium paid me for an article with 60,000 views.

OK, no fancy intro — let’s just get right into this. I’m not sure what the minimum standards for going viral are on Medium, but 60,000 views were good enough for me.
I started on Medium way back in 2013 when Medium was a very different place. Those first articles were as atrocious as my love life, but you have to start somewhere. I took a massive break before having an article that made a dent this year.
I got back into Medium in May 2020 as I kept seeing it referenced on other blogs and YouTube channels. I decided to hop back in.
Views were slow each month until one article made a bit of a splash, and I thought I’d share the data behind it.
The Story I Published
I’ve worked in health, fitness, and nutrition for over 20 years, and that’s what I wrote about years ago. These days, I have many other interests, and I often tire of health-related content.
This is what’s so great about Medium: You can write on anything that excites and inspires you.
On the other blogs I run, I’m limited to writing about that subject, but on Medium, you can write about anything. I love to write about marketing, psychology, the 1980s, movies, mindset, and many other topics. I still have a vested interest in health, so I’ll sporadically put that content out there too.
The article I wrote is The 6 Things You Need to Eliminate to Get Healthy. It’s filled with basic — but effective — health-related info for someone who isn’t sure where to start with getting healthier.
It didn’t take long to write, and if I can share any helpful info with people who may benefit from it, even better.
It didn’t really do anything for a few weeks but then somehow got going. It was published on September 10 and then gained some traction around September 27, as you can see here.

The Results of the Article
Here’s a screenshot of the earnings on the day I’m writing this:

As you can see, the nearly 60,000 views have got me over a thousand dollars. Not bad for an article that took me less than an hour to write. It’s averaged about $58 per thousand views, but it’s the engagement that seems more important.
Here are those stats as of the time of writing this:

Those extra stats are from the Medium Enhanced Stats Chrome plug-in that I saw Zulie Rane recommend. The little black dots at the bottom of the graph show the days you published and which stories those were.
There are many people on Medium who get these results regularly, but for me, it’s a big deal. It encourages me to keep going, as hopefully something else will click.
I know earnings and views will drop back down, but it’s motivating to see what’s possible.
Key Takeaways
The first takeaway is the usual thing: You never know what’s going to work. There is no formula for a successful, or viral, article, and if there was, everyone would do it.
There are other articles I’ve written, accepted by big publications and curated into multiple categories, that I was certain would be a hit. And they resulted in pretty much nothing. Again, like my love life. It turns out it was one of the random ones that found success.
Here are a few more takeaways.
Write about what you’re interested in: I think this is the most important thing. Share what interests you and put it all out there. Throw everything at the wall, because you never know what will stick. Many top writers on Medium mention to not worry about following trends and to put your heart into what you care about.
Views don’t always mean that much: They obviously help, but engagement is what matters. Only half the people that viewed the article read it, but it’s the fans, claps, and engagement that seem to determine a story’s success.
There’s an audience for everything: There are so many readers on Medium, (did you know the Medium staff profile has 50 million followers?) that you can find your audience — and more and more readers join by the day.
If something intrigues you — and you believe others will find it interesting — just write it. You never know.
