Here’s Exactly How I Made $12,000 From Writing In 2021
And my best tips for how you can do the same
I set a goal for myself at the beginning of 2021. It was to make more than $10,000 from my writing.
While it wasn’t easy, I surpassed that goal — but it was a learning experience. I learned which writing methods were profitable for me and which were not.
If I could offer one piece of advice for anyone who wants to make money writing, it’s this: Diversify your writing.
Write for multiple platforms, spread your work out and you’ll be surprised how much money you’ll be able to make. I know I was.
After sorting through all my writing income, I was able to break down my most profitable avenues of writing. Here’s the breakdown.
Book(s)

I made nearly $250 in royalties from my side hustle book and e-book in 2021. They were both published in September 2021. That income was only from the last 3 months of the year.
This is my most exciting side hustle because it’s extremely clear how I can grow it: By writing more books.
Also, I learned a lot from the process of publishing my first book. My biggest takeaway is that writing a book is only half the battle. Marketing and promoting it is just as much of a pain.
Self-publishing books can be a great form of passive income, but only if you’re not afraid to get out there and hit publish. I’ve written about it before in the past.
Clients
I had 0 clients at the start of 2021. I picked up a couple in the first few months of the year and still have them to this day. I was able to earn $5,000 from writing for clients.
Finding clients can be difficult — trust me, I know. I have very few connections in the writing world, but I do have advice about how you can find more clients and gigs.
First off, follow freelance writing accounts on Twitter. They post daily openings for clients who are hiring and other opportunities. Some of my favorites are:
My second tip is to pitch to more people. I found one of my clients through a content mill I used to write on. I did some work for them, messaged them and was hired almost immediately.
I was afraid to reach out but I’m so happy I did. You’ll never know if someone wants or needs a writer unless you ask. The worst they can say is no.

Writing online
Through various forms of online writing and blogging, I was able to earn $6,500. I understand this sounds vague, but let me explain.
This $6,500 came from a few different online writing platforms and content mills.
I will say no more. I think you should be able to infer the rest from here.
Here’s what I made NO money from in 2021
I felt it was appropriate to share some of my losses this year. Making the money that I did from writing was awesome, but I took a few Ls in the process.
A blog I started
I started a side hustle website and it hasn’t made me a cent. So far, it’s cost me a little more than $100 to get set up and start running.
It’s only been active since September 2021 and gets about 1 new visitor per week via Google search traffic.
The goal is to get the page views up on this website and then sell it, but that could take years.
In the meantime, I’ll keep publishing SEO-optimized content and hopefully growing my organic search audience. Also, there are other ways to monetize a blog that don’t include selling it.
My newsletter
The Side Hustle Club newsletter is completely free to read every week. We don’t even have sponsors so subscribers don’t have to worry about seeing ads.
A nice goal I have for 2022 is to get a few sponsors on board to support the newsletter. I still want to keep it free for subscribers, but maybe give them access to some related sponsored content.
I’m not sure if finding sponsors is a long shot or not, but I’ve got a few ideas I will be rolling out next year.
Social media
I made $0 from LinkedIn and Twitter. I honestly only use both to connect with other writers and troll people.
I thought I’d include social media on this list because I technically could be trying to grow my accounts for good instead of using them for evil.
Oh well.
E-book number 2 (unpublished)
I’m in the works of writing another e-book, but it’s unprofitable until it’s published and sales start rolling in.
I’m not sure when it will be ready to be published but I’m aiming for the first few months of 2022. Stay tuned.
Vocal.media
I thought I’d throw this one as a gag. Show me a writer who has made money from Vocal and I’ll show you a thousand that haven’t.
Making money from writing is possible
The fact of the matter is that writing is a long-term side hustle. If you’re not willing to play the long game, it probably won’t be profitable for you. But it is completely possible to make a nice amount of money from writing.
I’m not setting a monetary amount I want to make in 2022 like I did this year because I want to write out of joy next year instead of, well greed I guess.
Yes, I had fun writing this year but the projects I plan on working on next year will be more of my own. Whether or not they are profitable doesn’t matter as much as doing what makes me happy.
