Here’s A Quick Bedtime Routine for A Red-Eye Flight (Plus Some Essential Items)

It sounds a little horrific. But I promise it’s not that bad!

When I fly to Malaysia, my flights are always red-eye flights. A typical itinerary is a flight scheduled for 1:45 am. Gosh, that sounds tiring already, right? Don’t worry, you can do it!

In this story, I’ll share how I prepare for bedtime on the plane. The process starts before I even board the plane. Then it’s just easy-peasy!

Before The Flight

I’ll do my bedtime routine at home. For a 1:45 am flight, I aim to get out of the house by 11:00 pm at the latest. This will vary based on your distance from the airport, of course. I’ll have dinner and start preparing by 9:00 pm.

The routine includes everything I would do on a normal day. You can pretend you are getting ready for bed (although your bed is the airplane seat this time).

I’ll take a shower, brush my teeth, cut my nails, and apply my usual skincare routine. When I’ve made all my last-minute checks, it’s time to head to the airport.

On The Flight

Shortly after takeoff, they serve dinner. After dinner, I start getting ready to sleep. I usually try to eat a little faster than everyone else and slide out of my seat to use the bathroom. I don’t want to queue, so it’s the best time to beat the rush.

If you’re in business class, then you don’t really have to rush! 😄

My routine on the plane is literally a simple 2 step process. I brush my teeth again. My skincare routine has already been done, so I won’t have to remove any makeup. The only thing to do after brushing my teeth is to use a little bit of moisturizer if my skin feels dry again.

1 — Brush Teeth

2 — Use Moisturizer

Once I’m back at my seat, I’ll find a comfortable position. I don’t bring a blanket or use the blankets on the airplane. Instead, I’ll wear a t-shirt, a sweatshirt, and a fleece jacket. The fleece jacket serves as my blanket. That is usually enough for me.

Essential Items

If you are in premium economy or business class, you’ll get an amenity kit, which pretty much gives you everything you need. If you’re in economy class, here are some essential items you can bring for your red-eye flight.

  • Eyedrops (They don’t call it a red eye flight for nothing!)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Comb
  • Sleeping eye mask
  • Earplugs
  • A bit of hand cream and/or moisturizer

And that’s all! I can usually fall asleep quite well on the plane and won’t wake up until hours later. Sweet dreams!
