We are accustomed to setting goals whenever we want to accomplish anything. We have been told that setting and going after our goals is the only way to achieve results. Setting goals is so important that we have people describe themselves as goal-getter, goal-oriented, goal-driven, and so on. Undoubtedly, setting and pursuing our goals can make it easier to get what we want in life, but it is also true that not everyone who had goals actually accomplished results.

It is reasonable to be curious as to why some people achieve their goals, while so many others give up mid-way or never get to start at all? Is it true that some are natural goal-getters, and they possess some innate abilities that make them accomplish results? Can anyone become a goal-getter? These may be some of the questions you may have regarding the differences between those that get stuff done and those that do not.

Everyone can accomplish their desires, but the difference between those that achieve their goals and those that don’t lie not in the goals themselves but in the systems that the goal-getters followed. Here is an example, say you have a goal to ace an exam, you can come up with a plan to read for four hours every day to complete the syllabus and hopefully pass your exams with flying colors. That may work sometimes, and other times, it may not. If, on the other hand, you choose to follow a tested and proven system that can guarantee success in your exams, then you will be able to improve your chances of acing your exams. This system will be an all-encompassing approach that will not only include allocating time to study but will also specify the time of the day to study, the specific syllabus or curriculum to review, analysis of past exam questions, as well as other factors that have helped others passed the exam in the past.

Goals put your focus on the results you want to accomplish, while building a system helps you understand the process that will eventually lead to results. Studies have shown that understanding the process that leads to the desired result is a more effective and efficient way to accomplish any goal. It is by creating a robust system or following a proven one that anyone can turn their dreams into tangible results. Without a system to back up your goals, achieving the end result is not a given.

If you are a coach, you might have a goal to win a tournament. You need to support that goal with a system of recruiting, training, and managing your players before you can get your desired result.

If you are an author, your goal might be to write a new book; you should not stop there. You need to add a system that includes your writing routine and how you plan to promote your books to attract readers.

If you are a teacher, you might have a goal that all your students have a B and a better grade. Your system is how you plan to teach the students and motivate them to achieve the same results.

If you set a goal to lose weight, you should ensure you have a system that includes selecting the kinds of food you eat, the time you eat, and your exercise routine before seeing any meaningful results.

If you are a business owner, you might have a goal to increase your profits by 30% before the end of the year. Your system is how you create and promote your products and how you treat your customers.

Goals become more effective when you follow a proven system that has generated results in the past. A goal without a system will produce an inconsistent result where you sometimes achieve a result, and at other times, you fail to get what you want. If you want to consistently accomplish your goals, you must ensure you follow a tested system that can produce results.
