Summary

The author argues that focusing on identity politics without addressing wealth inequality undermines the broader struggle for social justice and the achievement of universal dignity, social mobility, and material security.

Abstract

The author, a long-time advocate for social justice, emphasizes the importance of addressing wealth inequality as the core issue underlying various social injustices. They assert that while issues like LGBT+ rights and gender equality are important, they represent only a fraction of a larger battlefield that includes universal healthcare, poverty eradication, and climate change. The author criticizes leftist movements for fragmenting the fight for equality by overemphasizing identity issues at the expense of the collective struggle against exploitation by capitalist elites. They highlight that the rich benefit from societal divisions and that the real war is a class warfare, where the exploitation of all individuals regardless of identity is the primary concern. The author calls for a united front against the billionaire class to ensure a dignified life, social mobility, and safety for everyone.

Here Is My Problem With Identity Politics

We will never achieve gender quality or racial equality if we ignore wealth inequality.

Since my teenage years, I have been engaged in social justice. I fundamentally believe in three tenets.

  1. Everyone deserves a dignified existence
  2. Everyone deserves the possibility for social mobility and an Open Future
  3. Everyone deserves to live in safety and material security

Each of these encompasses a myriad of social issues worth addressing. Universal Healthcare, Eradicating poverty, fighting climate change, LGBT+ rights, women’s rights, and so on.

This is why I have a big problem with leftist movements and parties focusing on identity issues.

I am not saying that LGBT+ people do not deserve to get more rights. And yes, women and men are still not equal in many respects.

But these issues only cover a small part of what is a much larger battlefield for me. For me, the three tenets above are what tie everything together. But if we only focus on these little corners, we fragment the fight. And when we do we lose the war.

We Are All Victims of Exploitation

Here are the facts. The capitalist billionaire elites are all too happy to see blacks fighting against whites. They love that men are fighting against women. And they rejoice at the thought of LGBT+ people fighting it out against gender-typicals.

Because it distracts from the real issue. That capitalism is built on exploitation. For the capitalist elites, it does not matter what gender you identify as. They could not care less about what skin color you have. Nor do they give a damn about what religion or ethnicity you belong to.

All they care about is how they can exploit you and the resources of the planet for their profit.

Real wages have been stagnating for years. Millions of people lost their jobs, livelihoods families, and sanity during the pandemic. Runaway inflation threatens millions more. Those millions include black people, white people, men, women, gays, lesbians, and people of various faiths and ethnicities.

The poisoned water that we drink because of pollution poison does not discriminate either.

And the billionaire elites managed to double their earnings in the meantime. The unequal distribution of wealth is bigger than ever.

The billionaires know it. They laugh at us. Because they have realized what the rest of us have not.

Marx was right. It is class warfare. The rich are fighting the poor in any way they can to protect their wealth.

If we do not start waking up and treating it as such, we will lose the war altogether.

The three tenets for me include everyone. And we must do what we can to fight back and preserve these. The only way to do this is to call the billionaire elites and corrupt politicians out.

And we need to build our communities where we practice these tenets in any way we can.
