Welcome to the tales of Hercula, a future renegade soldier.

Times have changed. The galaxies are run by seven massive Artificial Intelligences, who like to be thought of as gods.

Following a devastating tragedy, guided by the Artificial Intelligence, Brimstone, the renegade, Hercula has reluctantly agreed to take on ten tasks for FreezyWater, the unsavoury owner of Cellophane Station. Following her recent triumph with the Terracotta Dragon, Hercula will next face the Golden Hydra, a creature bringing ‘solace’ to the elderly on a distant world.

It was in the coffee and smee houses that clustered around the palace that most of the work got done.

Hercula caught the bubble lift at ground level. Although she was resigned, she was still ticked off with Freezywater. He had a nerve, ordering her about as if he were a commanding officer. He was nothing. A worm of a man. A maggot. There’d been many times in the service when Hercula had disliked her commanding officer. On one memorable campaign, she’d a spicy and tantalising love-hate relationship, with an emotionally distant android commander. But she’d always carried out her orders without question because in the service you obeyed not only the officer but the service itself. The individual may be flawed, but the service never was.

In civvy street, it was different. She’d pledged herself to do the bidding of FreezyWater for ten jobs.
