Summary

The Australian Prime Minister's actions at the G20 and COP26, including leaking private communications and not committing to environmental targets, have led to an apology from the people of Australia for his conduct.

Abstract

In October, the Australian Prime Minister's (PM) participation in international summits, the G20 and COP26, sparked controversy. At the G20, he was accused of dishonesty by the French PM regarding a cancelled defence project, leading to the Australian PM retaliating by leaking their private texts. Subsequently, he also leaked a US defence document. At COP26, the PM faced criticism for Australia's lack of commitment to environmental goals, including net zero emissions by 2050, methane reduction, and deforestation efforts, despite claiming that science will address climate change. Notably, the Australian delegation at COP26 was sponsored by Santos, a major fossil fuel company in Australia, underscoring the apparent conflict of interest. The public sentiment from Australia is one of apology for the PM's conduct, acknowledging a lack of substantial contribution to global environmental efforts.

Opinions

  • The Australian PM's actions are perceived as petulant and unprofessional, particularly in leaking private communications.
  • There is a sense of disappointment and embarrassment among Australians regarding their PM's behavior on the international stage.
  • The PM's refusal to commit to significant environmental targets at COP26 is seen as a failure to take responsibility for Australia's role in global climate change efforts.
  • The sponsorship of the Australian COP26 delegation by a fossil fuel company is viewed as indicative of the PM's priorities and a conflict of interest.
  • The article conveys a collective feeling of regret and a hope for better actions from Australia in the future.

Hello Planet, we the people of Australia, are sorry.

In October, Australia sent a delegation, headed by the Australian Prime Minister (PM), to the G20 and the COP26.

At the G20, the French PM accused the Australian PM of lying to his face about cancelling a defence project between the two countries.

The Australian PM then leaked private texts between himself and the French PM to the media in petulant retribution.

The US President supported the French claims.

The Australian PM then leaked a 15-page US defence document to the media.

At COP26 the Australian PM refused to legislate the net zero by 2050 target, methane gas reduction targets and deforestation efforts.

The Australian PM told COP26 “Science will solve Climate Change”.

The Australian delegation to COP26 was sponsored by Santos, one of Australia’s largest fossil fuel companies/polluters.

So, we’re sorry Planet, our PM is hopeless, no help this time around from Australia, better luck next year.
