Hello Darkness My Old Friend
A Poem

My lifelong relationship with darkness
Began as a child
As something to be feared
Hurtful things lurked there
Ready to pounce
And catch me unaware
As a teenager
It became a magical time
Feet moved more swiftly
With little effort
As if barely touching the ground
Levitation seemed more than a mere possibility
Rather an inevitable flight was fated to occur
As a young adult
It was a time for romance and expectations
An invitation to dream
Getting older
Artificial light often accompanies me
To avoid a life-altering fall
A final stage comes with the night
The question arises on its own wings
No longer is it content to be quiescent
Will I awaken to another morning?
Best prepare for that final darkness now
Letting go of unnecessary things
Saying goodbye to attachments
Forgiving old grievances
Loving without restraint
So that I might be ready
To not only soar
But to leap into the darkness
Trusting that this time
Everlasting light awaits
