Summary

The text contrasts the consequences of harboring evil versus pure thoughts, suggesting that one's mental state determines whether they experience suffering or happiness, likened to a heavy cart or a light shadow, respectively.

Abstract

The poem "Heavy Cart or The Light Shadow!" presents a duality between a life of suffering and one of happiness, contingent upon an individual's thoughts and actions. It posits that a person filled with evil thoughts and guided by disbelief is destined to endure suffering, as inescapable as an ox tied to a heavy cart. Conversely, those with a pure mind, marked by kindness and love, are promised protection from grief and are accompanied by happiness, as effortless and benign as a shadow. The text implies that the choice between these two paths is ours to make, and it is through wisdom that one can illuminate the right choice.

Opinions

  • Evil thoughts and deeds lead to inescapable suffering, akin to an ox laboring to pull a heavy cart.
  • A pure mind, characterized by kindness and good deeds, ensures a life free from grief, with happiness following like a harmless shadow.
  • The poem suggests that individuals have the autonomy to choose their path, either towards suffering or happiness.
  • Wisdom is presented as the guiding light that helps one choose the path leading to happiness over suffering.
  • The poem is influenced by the Buddhist text "Yamakavagga: Pairs," which explores the concept of duality in human experiences and the importance of making wise choices.

A Poem — Sufferings or Happiness

He who’s corrupted With evil thoughts and actions Guided by disbelief Will never see the light of wisdom

The sufferings will follow him As a return of the evil thoughts There will be no escape To this, a metaphor is given

The oxen tied to the cart Needed to pull the heavy lord No matter how painful There’re no alternatives

The one with the pure mind Possess the kindness and love With good thoughts and the deeds Will be protected from grief

The happiness will follow him Like a shadow with no harm Weightless and painless Will be a blessing to have

The heavy cart of sufferings Or the light shadow of happiness Is a choice of ourselves Need to be Illuminated by wisdom!
