Summary

The website content discusses the evolution of human behavior from basic survival instincts to complex social constructs, emphasizing the shift from physical aggression to a pursuit of social status through conformity and appearance, as illustrated by a DATAsculpture titled "Heart on Top" generated by MLearning.ai.

Abstract

The article "Heart on Top" delves into the contrast between animalistic behaviors driven by instinct and the complex social norms that govern human conduct. It posits that while animals act on immediate needs such as hunger, sex, and territory defense, humans have developed a social contract that redefines 'good' and 'bad' behaviors. In human society, aggression, once a means of securing resources and mating rights, has largely become obsolete due to the establishment of a stable society with abundant resources and predetermined mating through genetics. Consequently, the primary form of competition has shifted to the realm of social status, which is often pursued through personal aesthetics and societal approval. The piece reflects on the innate human drive to ascend social hierarchies and how this drive manifests in contemporary society as an obsession with popularity and physical appearance. The article also introduces the concept of "data sculpting" as a creative process using data as the primary material, and it provides an interactive 3D model viewer for the "Heart on Top" sculpture, which is available for purchase on OpenSea. Additionally, the article encourages readers to explore related content and invites them to connect with the author on various platforms.

Opinions

  • Human society has transitioned from a survival-based hierarchy to one centered on social status, which is often influenced by physical appearance and societal approval.
  • The pursuit of social status is an evolutionary holdover from a time when hierarchical positioning directly correlated with access to resources and mates.
  • Modern humans engage in less physical aggression due to the establishment of a social contract and the abundance of resources, leading to a redefinition of what constitutes 'good' and 'bad' behavior.
  • The article suggests that the drive to be popular and to look good is deeply rooted in the human evolutionary past, where such traits were indicators of high social status.
  • The author promotes the use of AI services, such as ZAI.chat, as a cost-effective alternative to ChatGPT Plus (GPT-4), highlighting a special offer for users.

How are we to determine what is good and bad? In the animal world, it’s easy. If you’re hungry, eat; if you have sex drive, get laid; if your territory or your family is threatened, fight for it. But humans aren’t like that anymore. Humans made a social contract and decided ‘we want this instead.’ Good behavior was defined by society as doing things other people approve of — with aggression against others being condemned as bad behavior.

But what is aggression? Aggression is a kind of struggle for power. It’s a fight over resources, mating rights or social status. But humans don’t need to fight anymore because they made their society such that there are no more resource shortages and mates have no choice but to acquiesce. Now humans only compete in games where winning gets you points that some people feel good about.

So all that’s left is social status, which has no practical value. And yet it feels good to win and bad to lose because we evolved as a hierarchical species — with the alpha male getting the best territory and mates, while those below him are scolded or punished. This means there must be an innate drive in humans to climb the hierarchy.

But when there are no more natural resources to fight over, the hierarchy is social status. And how do humans get that? By trying to please others by looking good and doing things they like.

That’s the process of socialization and indoctrination. In short, humans are doing things because they want to be popular, but since there is no real competition anymore and mating is already predetermined by genetics, being popular comes from looking good.

And that’s why people spend so much time and money on their appearance, trying to look attractive to others. And the reason why being popular is considered good behavior — because in our evolutionary past it was a sign of high social status.

Data sculpting is a creative process where data is the material out of which the works that are created take shape”
