Heart Knot Meditation

How to Untie the Pain

If you go regularly into deep meditation, the knot of pain in your heart could be a resource. Well understood pain in a kind heart may transform into healing energy.

Do a body scan. Close your eyes and wiggle the toes of your left foot to be mindful of that foot. Next do the right foot, then the left leg and so on. At some point you reach the beating heart. Next comes the other heart, the emotional heart, the “place” where you find love, fear, hope, joy and suffering.

Open your heart to love. Open yourself to a Presence who will massage the hard knot of suffering. Feel the stroking of the tight place within you. As it untwists just a little, you will let go the first drop of pain. When you let pain go, magic happens. It turns radiant and changes you. You in turn will change the world around you.

WARNING: Do not try to untie the knot in the heart of an actual physical person yourself. Leave it to the Ultimate Presence. I have made this mistake. Going deep is dangerous. Even if you are both serious at meditation, you can get thrown way off balance. You won’t even realize it until hours or even days later.

Set aside whatever objection you feel to the idea of “healing energy.” Not every real thing appears in your visual field. Some objects, like a crying baby appear in every field: visual, audio, tactile, olfactory, taste, cognitive and emotional. Other objects, like a star, fail to appear in most fields. Pay attention to profound aspects of reality that science has yet to measure well.

Set aside the notion that your emotional field is just some sort of thermometer measuring nothing but your interior state. Your heart is mapping the outside world every bit as much as your eyes. Your visual field is not the territory. It is a map. Physical reality beyond you has no colors. It has wavelengths. If you don’t believe me, watch the colors change when you approach the speed of light. As William Powers taught, look around you… that is perception. Your emotional field is also a map. Like your visual field, it is complex. It is more intimately connected to a personal reality beyond you than is your visual field. If you don’t believe me, imagine how well you would know your mother without it.

Prepare yourself before doing a heart knot meditation. Do a body scan. Recite the prayer of five declarations. If you are doing it with a partner, gaze first into one another’s eyes while clasping all four hands. Believe in one another. Change yourselves. Change the world around you. Heal.
