Summary

The website provides guidance on selecting healthy food items for shopping, emphasizing the inclusion of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates while cautioning against high-sugar, artificial, and genetically modified products.

Abstract

The article outlines a practical approach to healthy eating by suggesting a variety of nutritious foods to include in one's shopping basket. It categorizes recommendations into proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, acknowledging that while strict diets can be effective, they are often impractical for most people due to cost and time constraints. The author encourages the consumption of diverse protein sources such as meats, nuts, and lentils, and debunks the myth that all fats are unhealthy by listing sources of healthy fats like olive oil and avocados. Carbohydrates are recognized as a primary energy source, with options like sweet potatoes and berries suggested for a balanced diet. The article also advises against foods high in sugar, artificial sweeteners, and certain additives, promoting natural cooking and careful label reading to avoid genetically modified and unnatural ingredients.

  • The author believes that a strict diet, while beneficial, may not be feasible for everyone due to its expense and time consumption.
  • Healthy eating does not require adherence to extreme diets like keto; a balanced selection of foods is sufficient.
  • Fats are an essential part of a healthy diet, contributing to brain function, vitamin absorption, and heart health.
  • Carbohydrates should not be entirely cut out unless replaced with healthy fats in a ketogenic diet.
  • It is important to eat the right amounts of healthy fats to prevent them from becoming unhealthy.
  • The article suggests that readers should be flexible and look for deals or discounts on more expensive items like pistachios or meats.
  • Packaged foods with high-fructose corn syrup, trans fats, MSG, artificial colors, and preservatives should be avoided.
  • The author advises against consuming genetically modified foods and recommends avoiding ingredients that sound unfamiliar or synthetic when reading food labels.

Healthy Food Shopping Made Easy

So I write a lot about fitness advice and nutrition. I’ve touched on healthy diets a few times. In short there are many many many ways to eat healthy, you don’t need to follow some insane keto diet or something like that, if you have the time and the resources, go for it! It works.

But for the majority of us it’s too expensive and time consuming to follow a strict diet. Instead I wanted to make a list of the kind of things that should be going into your basket when shopping.

I will write a few lists of things you should and shouldn’t be buying and you can take it from there.

Protein

Some good options for proteins include:

Lamb

Beef

Pork

Fresh fish

Egg whites

Chicken

Turkey

Lentils

Almonds

Walnuts

Pistachios

I know some of these things are expensive but that’s why you can try to find different things on the list that may be cheaper at certain times. For example pistachios are very expensive but often go on a cheap sale in a store near me (I’m lucky I know). Equally a butcher might have some of the meats on a reduced price.

Fats

First of all a note, fats are not bad for you they are an important part of your diet. Healthy fats play vital roles in the body. They support brain function, help absorb fat-soluble vitamins, provide sustained energy, and contribute to overall heart health. Some examples of healthy fats:

Olive oil (preferably extra virgin)

Bone marrow

Avocado

Olives

Greek yoghurt

Cheese

Milk

As with anything you need to eat the right amounts of these things or they become unhealthy.

Carbohydrates

Finally carbohydrates. You need to be in a deficit if you want to lose weight. However they are also the main source of energy for your body so don’t try to cut them (unless your replacing them with healthy fats ie. keto).

Some good options include

Sweet potato

Squash

Dates

Berries

Banana

Oranges

Quinoa

Oats

Ok so that completes some suggestions of things that should be going in your shopping basket.

What to avoid?

If you can just cook everything naturally you should be fine. However most of us use a sauce every so often or a packet of something.

Ideally you want to avoid things that are high in sugar and/or artificial sweeteners. You also want to avoid unhealthy additives commonly used ones are:

high-fructose corn syrup

trans fats

MSG (monosodium glutamate)

artificial colors and preservatives.

Reading labels helps avoid them. Anything that says it’s GMO is not ideal. This means it’s been genetically modified. As a rule of thumb when reading a label if there’s lots of things like Soy lecithin or Xanthan gum and other things that don’t sound like there from this planet your probably best avoiding them.

I hope this article will help make your food shopping a little easier! Please consider clapping, commenting, saving and following me for more.

Thanks
