“She was sleeping in the school. I took her a little away and killed her with a stone and buried her. “— Amardeep Sada

These are not the words of an adult but that of a little 8-year-old boy called Amardeep Sada who lived in Bihar, India and, was charged with the crime of murder.

His victims were all babies less than a year old. He killed 3 babies before he was arrested and sent to a psychiatric home.

What led a young and seemingly innocent child to cold-blooded murder?

The Making of a Child Serial Killer

Amardeep was born in 1998 in a small village in Bihar to an impoverished family. His father has been described as either a poor farmer or a laborer.

In 2007, the Bihar police were called in by villagers to arrest a ruthless murderer amongst their midst. The police were shocked when the villagers handed in a slender, young, and innocent-looking child.

The initial reaction of the police was one of disbelief. They even rebuked the villagers for handing in a child. However, all of that changed when the villagers explained the story and Amardeep himself confessed to committing the murders.

Amardeep was only 7 years old when he started his killings. The first victim was Amardeep’s own sister who was just an 8-month-old infant. Without his parents’ knowledge, Amardeep carried his baby sister to a deserted field and hit her hard with a brick until she died. No one could hear the screams of the baby in the desolate field. He then hid the body under dried grass and leaves.

When his parents questioned him after failing to find their daughter, he showed them the baby’s dead body in the fields. The family’s reaction was unexpected.

Instead of turning him in, they kept quiet, decided to cover up the crime, and deemed that it was a “family matter” and outsiders did not have to get involved. Perhaps, they wanted to protect him or they must have thought that no one would believe them. In any case, their refusal to acknowledge the crime only emboldened Amardeep to continue murdering.

Amardeep’s next victim was his young cousin. His modus operandi was the same. He took the young victim to a deserted field and bashed the child with a brick. Again, this murder was deemed a “family matter.”

Amardeep’s third and final victim before his arrest was a 6-month-old baby girl. The mother of the baby had laid the baby to rest in the environs of the village school while she was away doing chores. When she returned, the baby had disappeared.

Amarjeet confessed that he had strangled the child and hit her with a brick. At this point, the villagers were already suspicious that Amardeep was up to something nefarious. The police were immediately called.

No Remorse for the Killings

The subsequent police questioning and interviews with Amardeep were rather weird. For one, Amardeep smiled a lot when talking to the police about how he had committed the crimes. The police actually became terrified to hear him sound so normal and happy when speaking about the murders.

While he was being interrogated by the police, he even requested cookies because he said he was hungry. This odd behavior only convinced the police to seek the help of a psychiatrist.

Amardeep was diagnosed as having a mental disorder. He was classified as a sadist who liked to kill.

Amardeep was not sent to prison because he was so young. He was detained in a children’s home until he could come of age as an adult.

Amardeep’s murder case became a big deal in India. Although he was a minor, his name and image were released to the media. He was eventually sent away to be placed in solitary confinement in a children’s home but the location of the home remains undisclosed.

Currently, in 2021, Amardeep would be about 22–23 years old. His whereabouts and identity remain unknown.

Amardeep came to be known as the youngest serial killer in the world. Although he was a child, he behaved like adult serial killers in that he selected his victims based on their availability, vulnerability, and desirability.

Amardeep knew that the 3 young infants were available for the taking because their parents would leave them to sleep while they were busy with chores.

Also, as an 8-year-old, Amardeep purposefully targeted children who were more vulnerable than he was. He never picked children his own age. Babies and younger children were the most vulnerable.

Amardeep’s motives for the killings remain unknown. Was the killing of his baby sister due to jealously because she was receiving all the attention as an infant? Or were the killings motivated by pure sadistic pleasure?

Amardeep did not have abusive parents. They were just very poor and could not give him much attention.

According to psychologists, feeling remorse and affection are emotions that are developed at infancy. A child who does not receive the right dose of affection and physical touching during this period may suffer from personality disorders.

A psychopathic personality could develop as young as the age of 2. A psychopathic child cannot show sympathy, remorse, or affection. Amardeep could easily have developed this type of personality.

The doctors who diagnosed Amardeep also stated that he could not distinguish right from wrong and needed to relearn the lessons of ethics and morality. However, they thought he could be cured of his sadistic nature by medication and therapy.

As of the time of this writing, it is not certain if Amardeep did end up learning right from wrong and if he was able to show remorse and/or affection. For all we know, he could be walking the streets as a free man with the potential to commit murders again.
