He Has Given Me Advice. Is It Good Advice? Yes. Am I Following It? Not Sure.
“Life is never easy. There is work to be done and obligations to be met…”
In October 2021, I returned to Canada after a really long holiday in West Africa. I had been away for 7 months. When I returned, there was so much to catch up on- work, finance, and study.
I got in touch with my colleagues studying for the boards. They met every morning at 7 am for 2 hours and discussed topics covered in the exams.
I didn’t have enough momentum for private study, so I happily joined them. Besides, whenever I got home from work, I was too tired to study. I knew there was power in consistency and it would somehow pay off.
A lot of those friends wrote their exams in 2022. They had been prepping long before I joined the group, so I did not feel odd. I missed them though cos remember; I lacked momentum for personal study.
At one point, I was the only one in the study group who hadn’t written the exams. I set my eyes on the last quarter of 2022. However, when that time approached, I had second thoughts about the exams and I wasn’t nervous.
One day, I was chatting with my boss and he said to me: “do not go in for that exam with sentiments. You need to master your concepts by studying them again and again.” So I had a pointer.
The next issue was how to develop personal momentum. Reading and studying on end is boring for me. I do not do long hours and I was thinking of a way to embrace studying with minimal inertia.
So I applied the strategy I used to learn french. I did quizzes every day. With french, I did one 15-minute quiz on my ride to work and another when I got back home at night. I resumed classes in October 2022 after a long break.
Consistency paid off.

For my boards, I do at least an hour of study every day. In that hour, I cover one or two topics. After watching a short video on each topic, I do the quizzes that follow.
Now, there are a lot of topics to cover. I had projected to write the exam in the first quarter of 2023. If I were to go by my boss’ advice and the size of my curriculum, I wouldn’t be ready this quarter.
One of my study partners had said she knew she was ready for the exams when, during practice quizzes, she gradually improved in speed and accuracy.
It is a good benchmark to work with. I am not there yet, but I am definitely committed to putting in at least an hour every day.
I really don’t wish to push the exams beyond this first quarter. It feels irresponsible but, the boss said: “do not go in for your exams with sentiments. You need to do your homework thoroughly. When you walk out of that exam, there will be no doubt about your performance.”
Thanks, Jason Edmunds.
