Have You Looked in This Place To Find A Few More Followers?

Advice from a fellow Medium writer

We all know about the big writers on Medium.

Tim Denning, Sean, Kernan, and Jessica Wildfire.

But I learned an interesting new way to find a few extra followers from a comment by Sieran Lane to one of my stories, and it’s worth passing on.

A Nightcrawler-like strategy

Subscribe to Tim Denning, Sean Kernan, and Jessica Wildfire, and if you feel moved by one of their stories, be one of the first readers to leave a comment.

You know how it works: Click on the envelope on their profile page to receive an email whenever they publish a new story, and this enables you to be one of the first to comment on their stories whenever you get that email notification.

It sounds like Jake Gyllenhaal’s character in Nightcrawler. He is a freelance cameraman who monitors police radios, chases down wrecks and fires and homicides, and sells his video footage to the highest TV station bidder.

Here’s how it can gain you some extra followers… as Sieran explains:

“Their comment section fills up very quickly, but if you are one of the first commenters, you will be exposed to many readers. Some readers may be intrigued by your thoughts, and may even come to follow you.” — Sieran Lane

And, of course, if they follow you they will read your stories! And the two of you may become acquainted via a Tim Denning or Jessica Wildfire’s story.

I think Sieran has made me a convert to this Nightcrawler-like strategy.

It reminds me of …

How I met a girlfriend in college: I was driving back from a night class at 10 p.m. and saw a crowd of people looking at an accident by the side of the road.

Normally, I’m not one who pulls over to gawk at car accidents. But I saw the crowd and was curious, and I started talking to a guy who also pulled over.

He was a college student like me but attended a community college.

We shared a cigarette and decided to eat at a diner across the street from the accident, and we sat in a booth next to a girl who…was listening to us talk.

She turned around at some point and joined in our conversation, and when she told me she came to the diner to study, I started coming there to see her.

And so I’m sure Medium readers can meet in the comments section to a story.

Stranger than fiction?

The meeting could be the beginning of a friendship that starts when two Nightcrawlers get to a story early and comment on each other’s comments.

Or one comes along later but notices the first comments to Jessica’s story.

They become intrigued with each other’s thoughts and start talking. And they decide to follow each other and read and comment on one another’s stories.

Does it sound Stranger Than Fiction or just another day on Medium?

Thanks for reading my story.

Shout out to Mary DeVries and her story, “Write a Great Subscribe Via My Link Promo For the End of Your Stories.” It had some great promo examples.
