Summary

A traveler shares their experience of being seated next to a loud and overbearing passenger on a long-haul flight from the UK to Singapore and how they handled the situation with kindness.

Abstract

The author recounts their anxiety while waiting for their flight, hoping not to be seated next to a particularly talkative and intrusive woman with her daughter. Despite their efforts to avoid this scenario, the universe seemingly had other plans, as the woman and her daughter ended up seated beside the author. The author describes the woman's disruptive behavior, including her demands for extra space and complaints to the flight crew. In a surprising turn, the author decides to offer their seat to the woman, allowing her and her daughter to have more room. This act of kindness led to a positive outcome for both parties, reinforcing the author's belief in the power of random acts of kindness, even when faced with challenging situations.

Have You Ever Been Seated Next to a Passenger Like This?

You know the one, loud & knows it all, and won’t shut up!!

Do you ever get that sinking feeling when waiting in the airport departure lounge for your flight, as the passengers gather, you try to work out who you will be seated next to? (Just me?)

You identify the ones, and find yourself thinking, “please don’t let it be them”.

That was me a few days ago taking my flight from the UK to Singapore.

12 hours 55 minutes no less.

So hopefully you can understand why I was so concerned about who would be my companion over the next few hours.

These People Have a Knack for Standing Out

My attention was caught by a woman with a daughter, chatting rather loudly to another passenger. In those brief minutes, I knew her whole life history and so did the rest of the departure lounge passengers.

I was certain she was one of those passengers who likes to chat throughout a flight. A chatterbox, that I am not!!

I secretly sent out to the universe not to let me be seated next to her.

Seems that you should not send out even negative manifestations like that cos this confuses up the universe or maybe it decided to play some sick joke on me, to test my ability to hold a conversation for half a day with a stranger.

Onboard, it unfolds

I’m seated early on board and sure enough, there are two empty seats beside me. I wait. The plane is filling up.

There she is with her daughter in tow.

They are among one of the last to board. Add to that they are loaded with carry-on bags. She proceeds to complain that there’s no space in the overhead lockers. She has the air stewards ferrying their bags squeezing them into spaces wherever they can. I think they have the same thoughts that I had earlier about passenger types.

Finally, they seat themselves down.

I breathe deeply and let go of the negativity that is threatening to capture and take off with us.

I turn and smile and hope she cannot see through my falseness. I hate feeling this way. We chat a while. That she is good at. (Groan from me).

After taking off, the seat belt signs turn off. She leaped out of her seat and went to the back of the plane. There I could hear a bit of a to-do as she demanded the use of an empty row of seats for her daughter to stretch out. After quite an exchange she was denied a seat change.

She returned not too happy, that was clear.

Her anger fueled further when soon after, the air steward moved another passenger travelling alone to those same seats she had tried to claim.

Immediately her call button went on. She proceeded to complain very loudly much to the embarrassment of her daughter.

Still, the air stewards were not budging.

That’s when I decided maybe I should budge.

I offered to move seats so that she and her daughter could have the three seats we were on.

The air steward somehow agreed to this plan.

It was a win-win all around.

She got the space for herself and her daughter despite her negative attitude, and I got the space away from them.

I am not sure why the universe is testing my random acts of kindness on this trip, but I’m remaining open to them and going with the flow. It worked out, just by being nice and friendly and we both got what we wanted in the end. The universe has strange ways of working, I am not questioning it, just going with the flow.
