Have You Ever Asked God a Dumb Question?

You can ask God anything

I can remember the question like it was yesterday.

I know God does not consider any question dumb, especially if you sincerely seek answers from Him. I cannot speak for others because when I asked my friends and family this question, their response to me was that they are sure it must have happened at some time during their walk with Christ, but they cannot recall the exact question. As for me, I can remember the question like it was yesterday.

At the time, I was a babe in Christ. I was just starting on my journey of discovering how amazing God is. I was in my honeymoon period with my precious Lord and Savior. I attended Bible studies, but what I enjoyed more than anything else were my one-on-one conversations with other Christians, especially those who walked with Christ for some time and had something meaningful and encouraging to share. These encounters always left me feeling hopeful and humbled. There were two things I always walked away with: one, I can ask anything of God, and two, I just needed to yield my will to Him.

Life became so much easier from then on

Me being who I am, I was ready to put all these teachings to the test. I must admit that I never got the concept of yielding my will to Him until much later in my walk. It was not that I was unwilling or did not put in the effort. I just kept trying, but it was not working. It actually worked when I least expected it too, and I had stopped trying. It was like literally letting go of whatever I was holding onto and free-falling, no conscious effort on my part. Life became so much easier from then on that I refuse to go back to holding on.

However, when it came to asking, that I could do, and I did. Immediately. I asked many questions and lots of favors. In some instances, I got immediate answers; in others, I had to wait. Some answers took years. But I was assured that God would hear and answer.

During my baby steps, while walking with God, I was also a babe in my career as a Systems Analyst. I worked as an Analyst on a procurement system at a utility company in New York. I analyzed the system requirements, designed, coded, tested, implemented them, and maintained this system. Inevitably, I found myself at a dead end on more than one occasion while testing a module.

Can you imagine me asking God if He knew how to program

In one such instance, I was at a loss. I tried every which way I knew how to debug a test module. In desperation, I looked to heaven, and I cried out to God for help. Then I paused, and, wait for it, here comes the dumb question. “God, do you know how to program, though?” Can you imagine me a mere mortal asking Almighty, all-knowing, Omnipotent God if He knew how to program? Well, there it is, folks, my dumb question.

This dumb question is not the only one I asked over the years of my journey with God, but this is the one the readily comes to mind when I think about the topic. I quickly came to my senses, realizing the ridiculousness of my question and God being who He is, did not hold it against me. As always, God came to my rescue, and of course, I successfully completed my task of testing and implementing that module by the grace of God.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, God does not consider our questions dumb. After all, He is the one who encouraged us to ask. Like any parent, I believe that God is waiting to provide answers to those questions we want to ask but are afraid to ask. He is waiting patiently and willingly to provide those answers. He wants to reveal Himself to us.

What my children had to say

I figured I was not the only one, so I asked others if they had erred in this area as well. As I mentioned earlier, family and friends could not recall their questions, so I asked my children. I have three children, two boys 14 and 12 years old, and a daughter 12 years old. My 14-year-old, when I asked him, replied that he does not question God. When I asked him why not, he responded, “Because God is God, so there is nothing to question.”

My 12-year-old daughter’s response to me was that she sometimes asks God why he put her in this family. I asked her why she posed this question to God. She replied that as parents, my husband and I are strict, and she wants her freedom.

He welcomes us His children, and He loves it when we come to Him

Do you have the outlook of my 14-year-old son? Maybe you think like my 12-year-old daughter. It does not matter which approach you have. Just know that you are free to approach the throne of our Father at any time with any question or concern that is in your heart. He welcomes us His children, and He loves it when we come to Him with our questions, concerns, fears, joys, and yes, even our silliness.

God is a good Father and delights in His children. I believe that His reactions are in some ways similar to ours when it comes to our children. We rejoice with them in their accomplishments and mourn their losses with them. We are happy when they make what we believe to be good choices, and we feel disappointed when their choices are considered unwise.

God is no different, I think the only difference is what we count as “good” and “unwise” choices, but this is no surprise to me because God already told us that His ways are not our ways and His thoughts are higher than ours. So, be as a child, and approach your Heavenly Father, knowing who you are and whose you are.
