Have I Lost Him Forever?
It is extremely saturated, and I can’t seem to find him among it all
A shy girl at a social dinner seated in the corner of the room scaredly looked around for familiarity, desperately in need of connection. The wait was brutal but she stayed occupied by twisting the corner of her scarf in the same rhythm as the tapping of her old faded black wedges.
Every invitation was an ordeal. As the clock ticked closer to the weekend, her nerves would twist harder and harder.
Saying no wasn’t the option because the face-to-face connections meant a greater deal to her husband’s business. But, the crowd, the fashion, the chatters all made her go in knots over and over.
Time perhaps would make it better but destiny had other plans.
The blues turned into positives.
The morning sickness and new baby made great excuses to stay at home on a cozy sofa.
Though, the best was yet to come.
The little man she gave birth to held her palms in tight confidence. When she reached for his fingers, at first it was for his safety, but who knew the benefits would reciprocate.
She held his little fingers as he took the lead. At times, leaving her to stumble over the gigantic diaper bag. But, he always came back with kisses and hugs.
Always excited to see his mom at the stands. Eagerly running to grab her arms into a warm hug.
He couldn’t wait to share every moment together and away with his mom.
He stayed in the 5 steps vicinity as a cozy blanket looking over her every move. It was the best company she has ever had. Her eyes lit up in confidence. People began to know her less as Sameera but more than his mom. He was the charm of her life.
And then…
Hormones kicked in and peers crowded his vicinity. His number one was no longer his priority.
She sat in the corner waiting to catch a glimpse of his sight. He was too saturated by the fame of friendship to see anything else. Little lunch reminders that were a hit once were now a nuisance. Her longing for a hug was now so lame. Her wanting to share everything about her day was background music to the hottest video game.
She faded in the backdrop, and her heart sank to the bottom. She lost all hopes in searching for a lost connection. She stayed slouched on the sofa as he lived his teen years to the fullest.
Nevertheless, she was delighted to see him happy.
Then, one day …
He barged in requesting help with an attire for a dance. She hesitated. She didn’t want to be thrown in a wastebasket as a used napkin. With caution, she proceeded to pick out an outfit and ironed it with care. He even asked to help finish the look.
Day after day, there were new requests for assistance. And this time was his necklace. He didn’t have birthday money left to buy a new one, and casually asked if the current one could be saved.
She was a queen of craft gadgets, and gladly signed up for the opportunity to savor whatever relationship was left. Furthermore, she overheard him proudly yapping to friends on a group call, “That’s what you get for having a crafty mom.”
All the nights on the sidelines were worth the wait.
I am slowly accepting that my first born is growing up and the relationship we had isn’t lost, it’s evolving into something new — something extra special.
