Summary

The Medium community is experiencing a noticeable decline in user engagement, as evidenced by a significant drop in the number of claps, which is causing concern among writers like Pene Hodge who rely on both claps and read time as indicators of appreciation and success.

Abstract

Medium's platform engagement appears to be at a low point, with many users noticing a substantial decrease in the number of claps they receive, which is a key form of feedback and validation for writers, despite not being the sole determinant of their earnings. Pene Hodge, a writer who feels compelled to write, shares her personal experience of this decline, expressing her disappointment at the reduced interaction on her articles. She questions whether the summer season is a contributing factor to this trend, as people might be more inclined to enjoy outdoor activities rather than engage with content online. Despite the low engagement, Hodge remains committed to her passion for writing and sharing knowledge, and she invites the community to reflect on their own experiences with reading and writing engagement on Medium.

Opinions

  • Pene Hodge values both the quantitative aspect of claps and the qualitative aspect of read time as measures of engagement and appreciation for her work.

Has Your Medium Level of Engagement Fallen to A New Low?

Or is it just a few ‘un’ lucky ones?

Where is everyone?

Medium engagement seems to be at a low point.

Even though the number of claps does not impact our earnings as much as the read time, they serve to make us feel more appreciated.

I love the see my number of claps adding up as much as I love giving out claps to everyone.

Recently, I have been leaving the sandbox a bit disappointed.

My clap count has dwindled to less than half and that’s on a good day.

This leaves me to ponder, where is everyone?

Is it due to the lazy hot daze of summer?

Does the low engagement count have anything to do with the lazy days of summer?

Are the readers and writers out there having long days of fun?

Are you and I among the lonely people in the world stuck inside reading on Medium?

Are we the only ones writing our hearts out?

Is everyone else out there and given themselves over to fun?

Why then do I keep reading and writing?

How is your reading engagement?

Is it the same or has it gotten worse?

Mine is pretty low right now.
