Has Social Media Made Our Real Lives Boring?
And how the answer is relative to how you implement it!
The 21st century is all about where you stand in your social circle. And people are associating those standings with the social platforms they use. Social media is strongly molding our lives and has a great impact on our daily routines. We can say without a doubt that life is no longer the same way it was before. The glamor, the glitz, and the bling that is shown to us on screen by the influencers, by the celebrities, and famous personalities indeed outshine our lives.
Social media is addictive and has shaped our world to a great extent. Every day there is something new that you see and are attracted to. And unconsciously you compare yourself to the life you see on the screen. Someone on your friend list is off to some luxury getaway, one is off to a dreamy romantic resort, while the other is having a wild night. And every one of them is updating his/her status and letting the whole world know how amazing of a time they are having. With that your feed keeps you updated about the glam life of many famous stars which is entirely not a normal one.
You start to compare your life to theirs.
While they are out having a blast, you are sitting in your pajamas, and just scrolling through your phone and imagining how the experience would have been if you were there at that particular moment.
That obviously makes it seem that your life is really bland in comparison to that shown on the social site you were scrolling just now.
But this would be entirely opposite if you are a homebody and an introvert who thinks that being alone, sprawled on the couch, binge-watching that show you had been waiting patiently for, in your comfy PJs, sipping your favorite drink, eating Doritos, and with no one to bug you in your “me time”, is heaven.
There are two sides to a coin. Just as stated earlier for extroverts might think that their life is dull in comparison to those influences but an introvert would think so otherwise.
It all depends on how the viewer takes in the content he saw. Because with 3 billion people connecting to the Internet via social media platforms, social media has become a powerful and far-reaching network.
The Power Factor
Apart from that glamorous side of social media another factor that can be focused on is the ability of social media to produce or influence attitudes:
- The ability to distribute publicity
- The ability to raise awareness on various issues
- The potential to generate or modify political and social views
- The potential for creating or changing public opinion
- Policy platform for campaigns
Social media may also help you personally to find new ideas, new trends, possibilities, connect deeper with the public, attract attention to your job; enable you to build, create and improve your brands. With so many ideas, activities, and plans it is hard for anyone to get bored using this platform.
In addition to this, social media is a lifesaving entity for older citizens. Because of loss of social contact and decreased interaction, elderly persons are easily exposed to the problems of psychological discourse. The benefit of social media, such as Facebook, is that it can link people and indirectly connect the social needs of every senior person. They can watch Vlogs, Creative and interesting videos on YouTube. They feel the lives of other people whom they are following. It gives them life. For what it’s worth, their once dull life is now much more attractive by using social media. It gives them great relief from their loneliness.
Social media is yet another strong tool to generate income. There are a lot of people who are earning through social media platforms. They are making Vlogs, running businesses and all types of buying and selling are happening via social media. Take their word for it. Surely they would oppose the fact that social media has taken the light out of their life. Rather it would be entirely opposite!
Social media is a magnificent tool that offers a variety of possibilities and benefits. On social media platforms, you meet fascinating people and you can learn a lot from them. But we cannot deny the negative aspects. They are the backdrops in a nutshell if you say. They are destroying lives in several ways. Social media can provide a person with an isolated environment that keeps him or her apart from the family or community. Such seclusion may attract racism, fanaticism, terrorism, pornography, or pedophilia, especially among young people.
In the end, it is how you use social media and how you implement it in your life. And that decides whether your lives are boring or not.
Social media has thrills and ills. It is changing the mindsets, breaking fall notions from the society. Don’t go out there comparing yourself with that glam and glitz. Our life is normal and happy. And we have that peace of mind. This is all that matters. And that is all that should matter.
