Summary

The article discusses the current state of COVID-19 in the US, noting a rise in cases despite a decline in mask-wearing and public concern.

Abstract

The author, Nicole Dake, shares a personal account of observing a lack of mask-wearing in public spaces, despite increasing COVID-19 cases in the US. She contrasts this with her own cautious behavior and the possibility of New York reinstating mask mandates. The article references a highly transmissible Omicron subvariant, BA.2, which has become dominant in new cases. Despite a 3% increase in cases, public behavior remains largely unchanged, suggesting a collective burnout or indifference to the pandemic. Dake invites readers to share their experiences and maintains an optimistic tone, encouraging wellness and offering her writing and social media presence for further engagement.

Opinions

  • The author expresses concern that people are no longer taking COVID-19 precautions seriously, as evidenced by the lack of mask-wearing in public places.
  • There is a sense of disbelief or questioning about whether the public has forgotten about the pandemic, given the rising case numbers.
  • The author and her family continue to take precautions, such as wearing masks when going out and preparing for travel by testing, indicating a personal commitment to safety.
  • The article suggests that there may be a level of pandemic fatigue or a point of universal burnout contributing to the public's lax attitude towards COVID-19 guidelines.
  • Dake implies that the increase in cases, albeit small, should still be a cause for concern and a reason to maintain health protocols.
  • The author's offer to provide a free PDF copy of her book to low-income individuals indicates a commitment to community support and accessibility of mental health resources.

Has Everyone Forgotten About COVID?

Cases in the US are currently on the rise, but people have mostly stopped wearing masks.

Yesterday, I had to go into my office, which I rarely do. People weren’t wearing masks. It makes me wonder, have people stopped thinking about COVID?

This morning on the news, they were saying that New York may be reinstating their mask mandate.

Here in Colorado though, people aren’t wearing masks anymore.

We still wear our masks on the rare occasions that we go to get gas, or go to the supermarket. We have to be extra careful, we are getting ready to go on an airline flight this week, and are required to test first.

Even with cases currently on the rise, people seem less concerned about COVID than ever. Have we just reached a universal burn-out point on the pandemic? Have people given up caring?

According to the New York Times,

Dr. Jha’s tenure begins as a highly transmissible Omicron subvariant, known as BA.2, has become the dominant version among new U.S. cases. As of Sunday, the United States was averaging more than 31,000 cases a day, an increase of 3 percent over the past two weeks, according to a New York Times database, just a fraction of the height of the Omicron winter surge.

Although a 3% increase may not seem like much, it is still an increase none the less, and it doesn’t seem like that is making a difference in people’s behavior anymore.

What has been your experience? Do you see everyone acting like the pandemic is over too? Let me know what you think in the comments.
