Has a Woman Ever Appeared on U.S. Currency?
Pursuant to The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, the Department of the Treasury and U.S. Mint to mint are allowed to issue new quarter coins.
Beginning in 2022, there will be five designs that feature a different woman and are to be minted each year between 2022 and 2025.
Currently, Sacagawea continues to appear on the dollar coin which began after 1981. The public was previously invited to provide suggestions of women who should be included on the five commemorative quarters in the first round.
“The women must have been accomplished, have contributed significantly to the United States, and the committee is specifically seeking to ‘honor women from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds.’”
So far, Maya Angelou and Sally K. Ride will be front runners celebrating iconic women.
