Hard Work is Not Enough to Succeed
It also involves luck and other factors.

Every single people wants to become a successful person, including myself and those who read this article. But have you ever think what kind of factors that makes us successful in life?
Most of the successful people would say that if we want to succeed in life, we must work harder than ever. Elon Musk has stated that,
“Work like hell. I mean you just have to put in 80 to 100 hour weeks every week. It improves the odds of success.”
As we know that Elon Musk is a founder of SpaceX, Tesla, The Boring Company, and many others. He is really successful in building his companies to become a reality with all of his ups and downs.
But are you really sure that all of the success comes only from hard work? No!
Here is one quote from a statistician called Nassim Nicholas Taleb. He said that,
“Mild success can be explainable by skills and labor. Wild success is attributable to statistical variance.”
What does he mean is that we can succeed, but to reach the ridiculous rate, it’s only luck that makes us can get that success. Even God has stated that all of us get our own success, but we have to take time to understand it. It takes hard work and also luck.
Ash Ali and Hasan Kubba have released a book called Unfair Advantage. The book tells us that hard work is not enough. It involves luck and many factors to become successful on things.
Unfair Advantages is the privileges that we have, and with that, we can move way forward than anyone else. A happy family, a good education, a vast amount of connection are the examples of the privilege.
To describe how it looks like, let’s take a look on Evan Spiegel. He is the CEO of Snap Inc. (Snapchat). On 2015, he was the youngest billionaire at the age of 25. How can he get the success at a young age?
He got the privileges. He grew up on a multimillion-dollar household in Los Angeles. His parents were lawyers working on high-profile cases, and also they really support on Evan’s education that they even paid on an elite tutor for 250 USD. What a huge amount of money. Because of his parent’s job, they have many connections, including a venture capitalist that makes his startup gets a lot amount of money.
Despite that, he was hardworking on his startup, and those factors make it more successful than ever. He also realized that he got the luck, and even give a statement like this,
‘I got really, really lucky. And life isn’t fair.’
That’s not the only example that has an unfair advantage. Elon has that also. He is a South African, and then he moved to the United States to pursue higher education at Stanford. Then, he also had a huge interest in science that inspired him to build SpaceX and Tesla. And there are many more successful people have their own unfair advantage which you can read in the book.
All of us have our own unfair advantage, but how to find them? The writers of the book propose a framework called MILES framework. It’s an abbreviation that consists of
- Money that you have,
- Intelligence and Insight,
- Location and Luck,
- Education and Expertise, and
- Status that includes your connection and branding.
You don’t have to have all of those, choose more than one of them to increase your opportunity to become one-step ahead than your competitor.
How to strengthen that framework? All you have to do is to build a strong foundation, and it’s called a mindset. Mindset will control yourself to achieve something. Carol Dweck stated that two mindsets exist, and they are fixed mindset and growth mindset.
Fixed Mindset is a mindset where people believe that our performance never changes. And Growth Mindset is a mindset where people believe that our performance can improve when there are obstacles that are coming.
The Growth Mindset is the game-changer on how you face the challenge in front of you. If you got a new challenge, you will become excited rather than those who have a fixed mindset. Therefore, you should have a growth mindset first, and you should be happy for any challenge come on you and not the opposite.
Final Thought
All of us want to become successful. But to reach that, we cannot rely only on hard work. We must have unfair advantages to have one-step further than our competitors.
We all have our own unfair advantages, and you should find them to become successful than ever. But keep in mind, it doesn’t mean that you will have a wild success. It just a luck to make that happen, and it’s really random.
We don’t have to worry about that. We will have our own success. What we have to do is that we should grateful for what we have, and let the randomness plays on our success.
