Social Media

My Happy Moment

I do this once a day

Social media. Blessing or curse?

A great timewaster, for sure. And a great way to connect to those you need in life. The secret of social media is a happy medium.

Every day I look through my Twitter feed. There’s always something interesting there, from my contacts, from those I follow, and from retweets, selected by my contacts to share.

I find those I don’t follow and follow them if they have interesting stuff. I browse their posts, maybe find something to think about, an idea for a story, a cute phrase, whatever.

Maybe I’ll do a #writerslift and follow a few dozen people and retweet their pinned tweets.

It’s all good.

But here’s the best bit

Once a day, I’ll open up the list of people I follow — it’s a few hundred names long now — I’ll scroll down to the bottom, working my way up, and I’ll unfollow ten accounts that don’t follow me.

If they have been on my following list for a week or so and they haven’t followed back, they haven't read or enjoyed my contributions enough to follow me, or they are playing a selfish follow/unfollow game to build up their numbers.

Unless they are someone like Stephen King who isn’t going to follow me no matter how huge a fan I am. Or someone whose stories I like a lot and will follow them no matter.

I see these few seconds of scrolling and clicking as nudging the universe back to a level.

Every day, my social media feed becomes more refined towards the people I enjoy following, and those who enjoy following me.

How do you do?

  • What’s your social media secret?
  • How do you make it work for you without getting swallowed up?
  • Is it time well spent in your day?
  • Have you connected with someone you want to share?
  • What’s your Twitter handle?
