Summary

The web content discusses the concept of "happy addictions," questioning whether certain activities like running marathons can be considered positive addictions and the motivations behind them.

Abstract

The article "Happy Addictions — Do They Exist?" delves into the nuanced nature of addictions, presenting perspectives from individuals like Kayla and Edward on whether engaging in activities such as running marathons can be seen as beneficial dependencies. It explores the idea that while exercise, like running, can release endorphins and be addictive, the underlying reasons for such behavior determine if it's truly a "happy addiction." The piece suggests that even seemingly positive activities can take over one's life if not managed healthily. The author, Gabriella, invites readers to consider the complexities of addiction and share their thoughts on the matter.

Opinions

  • Kayla believes that addictions can be broadly defined and that what may seem like a positive addiction, such as running a marathon every month, might be driven by underlying issues.
  • Edward equates running to an addiction due to the endorphin release it provides, questioning whether this constitutes a happy addiction.
  • The author, Gabriella, posits that the reason behind an activity, whether it's to escape feelings or to pursue health and strength, is crucial in defining it as a happy addiction.
  • Tracy's opinion is cited, indicating that even positive addictions can become overpowering and consume one's life.
  • The article implies that societal perceptions of hard work and dedication in training for marathons can lead to these individuals being viewed as role models.

Let’s dive into the question. During our discussion, Kayla mentioned there can be so many addictions. She called them happy addictions. Kayla was telling me:

How about when someone runs a marathon every month?

She asked so what is up with that? Is it a good thing? So, they are training very hard she said, and they are hard on themselves and a lot of people will look up to them and say how amazing this is. People might look at people training so hard as role models.

Kayla describes that addiction can be broad and it might be difficult to understand what drives people to do something that could be addicting.

When I was talking to Edward he had mentioned running as an addiction. Exercise releases endorphins and can be addictive. Is it a happy addiction? Is there such a thing? Kayla thought it all depends on the reason why someone is doing it. Are people running away from their feelings? Or just want to be strong and healthy? It makes a difference.

Tracy discusses that people can be addicted to something positive, and then it can still take over their lives.

Share what you think. Are there happy addictions? Thank you for reading, Gabriella

This book is dedicated to the memory of

Bagóczky József my uncle who died at age 19 — alcohol-related car accident

and to everyone else who has been hurt or lost related to addiction

Many people had been supportive and inspiring to me so I could create this book. Both of my wonderful children told me, just write that book, mom. My mom. I could have not done this without all the stories provided and the encouragement love and caring from my family and friends, nurses, doctors, counselors, teachers, professors, friends who are dealing with addiction and staying sober; and children, wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers of people who are dealing with addiction currently. Thank you for speaking up, sharing your stories and life experiences. Thank you to all the people who read this book while in progress to provide feedback, ideas, and encouragement for me to continue writing. I would like to say special thanks to my friends and family for believing me and encouraging me to go on.
