Behold the sight, flag shines bright!
India became independent on 15th August 1947 when she became free from British rule. Independence Day is a national holiday celebrated with great pomp and pride across India and by Indians everywhere in the world.
In our condo, the residents gather in front of the building at 7 am to hoist the flag, sing the national anthem and enjoy sweets to celebrate.
Let me share a few interesting facts about the Indian tricolor flag.
- Pingali Venkayya designed the Indian National flag in the year 1931.
- The colors symbolize:
Saffron: strength, sacrifice, and courage. White: peace and truth. The Dharma Chakra — in navy blue in the middle signifies the “wheel of law” made by the 3rd-century BC Mauryan Emperor Ashoka. It shows that there is life in movement and death in stagnation. The wheel has 24 spokes (24 qualities of a person). Green: fertility, growth, faith, prosperity, and chivalry.
- The first Indian national flag was hoisted on 7 August 1906 in the Parsee Bagan Square (Green Park) in Calcutta.
- The Indian National flag was adopted on 22 July 1947
- Madam Bhikaji Rustom Cama was the first person to hoist the Indian flag on foreign soil on 22 August 1907 in Stuttgart, Germany.
- The Indian flag was hoisted on Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain peak, on 29 May 1953.
- The Indian flag flew into space in 1984, attached as a medallion to the spacesuit of Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to travel to space.
- The National Flag hoisted at Central Park, Connaught Place, New Delhi, is one of the largest in India: 90 feet long, 60 feet wide, and is hoisted on a flagpole of 207 feet.
- India holds the world record for the largest human flag formed by 50,000 volunteers in Chennai in December 2014.
