Summary

The website content details a week in the life of an individual who has started a new job at a company in the countryside, where their love for work, especially when it involves flying, is evident amidst the challenges of unpredictable weather and the joy of encountering wildlife.

Abstract

The narrative describes the author's recent workweek, which marks the beginning of a busy season at a new job. Despite the initial quietness due to weather cancellations, the week was filled with enjoyable moments both on the ground and in the air with colleagues. The author, who is also a photographer, took the opportunity to explore the countryside, capturing images of nature and wildlife, including a kestrel in flight. The week included teaching skydiving students, experiencing unexpected landings in fields, and close encounters with deer. The author lives on-site, simplifying their commute, and they share the beauty of their home from an aerial perspective. The week concluded with a peaceful sunrise and a return to work, with a nod to the photography challenge that has been a source of inspiration since 2020.

PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

Happiness is When You’re Having Fun at Work

Week 89 of the photographic documentary of my daily life

The season has started again and this means it will get busier by the week. The Easter weekend wasn’t too crazy yet but it was a good time to get used to the work routines at the new company.

As I am writing this on my off day, I’m smiling from within. It was a good week. We get along with the staff and had fun together. On the ground and in the air.

When you love your job — is it still work?

The week had started as always on a Thursday. We were supposed to work but all loads had been canceled due to the weather. It wasn’t raining all day long but it was overcast. Fine, drizzling raindrops were falling from the sky now and then.

Another day. And again. Rain, wind, and more clouds. Time for me to work on some writing projects but eventually I also wanted to get some fresh air and decided to go for a walk when what seemed like was a break in between all the rainfall.

I took my camera and went to explore the neighborhood. When I say neighborhood, I have to add that I did not pass any houses. We’re living in the countryside. I walked through forests and crossed fields. Birds were chirping and this lone wanderer enjoyed the fresh air.

On my way back I saw this bird from far hovering above the fields. He was standing still in the air. It seemed like it at least. With countless wing beats per second, he was keeping his position above the ground with what seemed like hard work.

I tried to take a couple of photographs but didn’t think I would be able to identify the bird. As always, I relied on my eBird App, alias my mom. I sent her the picture.

She was hesitant at first and asked me if the bird was hovering. I agreed and then she quickly told me that this bird is a “Turmfalke” which stands for kestrel in English.

On Saturday, the sun finally came out, and we had a busy day at work. I did lots of jumps with students and enjoyed teaching ambitious people how to fly.

On one of the jumps, we were quite far from the landing zone and as I am new at the place I struggled at first to identify my location under the canopy. Only once I looked at the other canopies and saw in which direction they were flying, I knew where I was.

On the following jump, I was even further out when I opened my canopy and it was clear I wouldn’t make it back to the airfield. Which wasn’t a reason to panic for me since there are so many fields all around where I can easily land.

Which I did. I then picked up my canopy and started walking through a tiny forest while trying to get to a road where I was hoping someone would pick me up and drive me back to the airfield.

But as I was walking through the forest, I got surprised by a family of deer. Just a few meters ahead of me 4 deer were crossing my path. And as it was happening I was just thinking I don’t have my phone with me to capture it. Totally forgetting I had a camera mounted to my chest.

However. It made my day seeing those deer so close.

Some say happy Easter. I say another day at work.

It was cold last night. How cold? Cold enough for the water in this bucket to freeze overnight.

I loved the different patterns the freezing water had created.

And this is the view from our home. From the sky. I captured the aerial view of the trailer park we’re staying in while flying with my parachute above it.

Yes, I live at work. I don’t need to commute or drive anywhere. I just get up and walk right into the office building.

Usually, Mondays are our off days but due to the Easter public holiday, we were open. The weather was perfect and here you can see me taking a selfie together with the camera flyer and my passenger.

We got Tuesday off since we worked on Easter Monday and this lovely day had started with a peaceful sunrise.

And Wednesday, we were back to work. Just after take-off, I captured this small patch of forest right behind the trailer park. It’s where a family of deer passes through almost every afternoon.
