Happiness. Everyone has their own criteria of what makes them happy. It can be money, cars, rare items, health, family or all of the above. As you are reading this article, you too, might have your own set of rules of what makes you happy.

We all, have different principles, tastes and aspirations. Therefore, happiness cannot be measured on an exact scale, nor through a test or internet questionnaire. Happiness varies, and so the things that make someone happy.

This article will present the ins and outs of happiness, how it is, like most of our feelings, subjective and how the phrase “Come on, be happy?” does not bring a smile for about 90% of the time.

The literal and figurative definition

“Happiness is that feeling that comes over you when you know life is good and you can’t help but smile. It’s the opposite of sadness. Happiness is a sense of well-being, joy, or contentment.” — vocabulary.com

By definition, happiness is the act of being joyful. What the literal definition tells us, is what happiness feels like, how it looks and how it can be identified. What the literal definition doesn’t say is how to achieve it.

What happiness really represents, is the result of doing something pleasurable or that satisfies your aspirations.

Happiness is a form of reward.

But what about money?

I am glad you asked. Well, we all hear the phrase “Money doesn’t buy happiness!”, but the truth is, that it can. Money is a medium through which you can satisfy your goals, pay your debt or reward yourself for the hard work that you put in.

Happiness, is all of these, it is what we want it to be.

The perspective

When looking at the words above, it probably hit you, “Isn’t happiness dictated by your own perspective?”. Someone, might posses all the money that one could imagine, he or she, could live in the most expensive house on this Earth, but all of these material incentives wouldn’t bring them happiness. “You are joking right? Who wouldn’t want their lifestyle?”, no I am not. They achieved their goal of becoming successful, they were happy for a while. Their values, as they advanced in age, could have changed. Therefore, their perspective on the value of money shifted from being a priority to being a posteriority, they now, needed a new matter to be happy about.

When getting your first clap from a reader, you are happy, you attain your goal. You wrote and read, you invested effort and time, from your perspective, it is a big achievement so you are happy. After a period of time, you might become used to getting a clap on your story, so you aspire for 10, and when that is achieved you are happy again.

We all, can induce some degree of happiness by just thinking about different privileges that we have. About the fact that we have somewhere to sleep, or that we can express our thoughts on this amazing platform.

The conclusion

Since childhood, I always dreamed of having a nice car, money and fame. Who wouldn’t?

Life is a culmination of moments, some are happy and some are not. As we grow up, we change what we desire, we look for different things, we try to find happiness.

Being thankful for what you have is essential, it automatically sets your brain to be satisfied with anything in your life. That’s just one of the perspectives.

Money brings happiness, but only if your perspective on happiness is oriented towards money.
