Instead, it suggests that happiness is a personal choice and a product of one's mindset. The author outlines several steps to cultivate happiness as a lifestyle: taking responsibility for one's situation, self-motivation through inspirational reminders, surrounding oneself with like-minded individuals, and abandoning perfectionism in favor of consistent effort. Happiness: How to Turn it from a Goal into a Lifestyle

Keeping thinking about how bad things are going in certain areas of your life will NOT get you anywhere. To talk about all the things that are wrong in your life? No way.

If you want to be happier, you must practice happiness as a lifestyle. Keeping thinking about how bad things are going in certain areas of your life will NOT get you anywhere.

To talk about all the things that are wrong in your life? No way. To read books on how to help yourself? It may help, but books won’t do it for you.

You have to do something; you have to change the way you THINK. So start being happier. Make a decision or set a goal. Whether you read personal development books or start a gratitude journal, whether you start praying or meditating, things will go well until something gets in your way again.

So how do you make happiness a lifestyle instead of a failed decision?

1. Take responsibility for the situation you are in.

You will never be able to find true happiness with the belief that someone else or something else is keeping you stuck where you are. Stop wasting your power! You chose your path, which means you have the ability to choose something better.

Choosing a better path is not always the easiest choice and may have consequences that are difficult, but ultimately YOU are the only person responsible for how you feel. When you understand this, you realize that you can create anything you want.

2. Motivate yourself.

Find ways to keep in sight the new things you want to introduce in your life to be happier. Just as if your goal is to go to the gym every morning, you might put your equipment in a visible place as a visible reminder, use the same process for your mental reshaping.

Change your screen saver (the background image of the computer screen that appears when it goes into hibernation) with a quote that inspires you, start each day with an inspirational message, wear a piece of jewelry, or keep an object on you that reminds you of your new intention.

3. Surround yourself with responsible people with the same goals.

Yes, real change must be driven from within. But there’s a reason people hire personal trainers when they’re trying to get healthier. Responsibility encourages a continuous movement toward progress and motivates us not to give up. Find someone who wants the same things as you and hold each other accountable.

4. Give up the all-or-nothing attitude.

It doesn’t matter who you are or how enlightened you are, you will never be perfect. You will have better days, in which you will succeed in doing what you set out to do, and fewer good days in which you will not even want to try to do something.

Take a day or two off. When you take a leave from work, you don’t do it thinking that when you come back, you’ll have to relearn everything you did. You just pick up where you left off. It is the same with the days off from the lifestyle. Let your brain rest after all the rewiring it has done, and pick up where you left off after a few days.

A break for a few days does not mean giving up. It doesn’t mean all or nothing. A happy lifestyle is no different from any other new habit you want to develop. The secrets of success are the same. And if you want something you’ve never had, you’ll have to do something you’ve never done and then practice that thing.

You can create anything you want in your own life. You just have to stop thinking about what you don’t want, focus on what you do want, and then take action to make it happen.
