Happiness: Hotel and Hospital

The connection and the bond

What is the connection between the three H’s? People may be happy in a hotel but how can a person find happiness in a hospital?

Hotel Visit

On my birthday, I went to Taj Man Singh Hotel for dinner. I was so pleased to see the beautiful interiors. The walls were adorned with paintings. The furniture was exquisite. The flower arrangement was admirable. I appreciated every detail. It was a feeling of joy. I was filled with happiness. The food and the service automatically became so pleasant.

Hospital Visit

I later visited a friend at the Apollo Hospital in New Delhi. The exterior was very big and modern and at the reception, there was a lot of rush. Too many people. I knew the room number, so I just went to the lift and pressed the button for the 8th floor. On the walls, there were paintings. It was neat and clean. There was a disinfectant smell and the interiors were very clean. The nurses were moving in their uniforms helter, skelter, wearing their statoscopes, carrying some medicines or bottles or injections from room to room, looking after patients. Although the place was modern and neat and no longer like the drab hospitals earlier, it felt a little gloomy.

Discharge from Hospital

Three days after my visit, my friend called me up and said that she was well and was getting discharged from the hospital.

She needed some help and asked me to visit her and to be with her till her family members settled the dues with the hospital.

As soon as I entered her room, everybody was cheerful. The family had bought sweets from the sweets shop for all the nurses and the staff.

They were all packed because the hospital did not allow food to be carried to the rooms so it was to be distributed near the car park.

I saw the joy on the faces of the patient, the family members, and the nursing and other staff members. The hospital atmosphere had changed from gloomy three days ago to cheerfulness.

Connection of Happiness

I began to think of other visits to hotels and hospitals in other cities and countries. In Europe, the USA, or Australia.

Everywhere, the story was the same. Well, deep in thought, I felt that there has to be a connection of happiness between hotels and hospitals.

First, I thought that a hotel is a place that brings happiness but hospitals are gloomy. Then I thought that there was a deeper connection. Hotels care for people’s happiness and so do hospitals. Both hotels and hospitals have a common thread of care.

In a hotel, your mood lifts up when you enter because the person who lets you in is smartly dressed. He makes you feel very special and ushers you into the lobby. The lobby is designed by the best interior designers. You are welcomed. People around are chit-chatting. When you see this atmosphere you are cheerful.

In a hospital, when the patient is admitted, he is sick and needs comfort so everyone is quiet. The patient is demoralized with doctors and nurses, surrounding him, and because of pains, medicines, prescriptions, and uncertainty.

What are our takeaways? A hotel is a place where people are happy as soon as they enter but a hospital is a place where people are happy when they leave. Both of these buildings spread happiness. In a hotel, you go in to enjoy but in a hospital, you enjoy when you are recovered and are well.

Spread happiness around you with care. Any opinions? Any thoughts? I am waiting to share it with you.
