MOONSONG POETRY
Hand by Hand
You’re like the moon

They stood together Side by side Hand by hand Looking up at the night sky She saw a half-moon Half full of hope Promise, potential Half full of shame Disappointment, failure He saw a full moon Radiant, shining bright The apple of the sky’s eye She tried to close her eyes To dispel the vision To disbelieve his belief It was hard, but He was adamant: Whoever told you You’re not good enough Was wrong, plain wrong, He said. And whoever said you were Too much Was too full of himself. You’re not too beautiful Or too delicate Or too anything. You’re just you. You’re like the moon. No one ever says The moon is too full Or not full enough. Yes, tides change And some nights are darker But the dark nights are For holding close The warm nights are for Giving space And the perfect nights Are when the sun and moon Dance across the sky together Singing the same starry song Making everyone a little brighter A little lighter. She opened her mouth To speak, and said: You’re an idiot. But she smiled. And her smile Brightened the whole world.
