Where I Found the True Spirit of Halloween

I am thankful to my neighbors for making Halloween a fun and festive holiday

“I love Halloween, and I love that feeling: the cold air, the spooky dangers lurking around the corner.” — Evan Peters

One of my favorite parts of Halloween is strolling around our community in the evenings and observing the Halloween decorations in mid to late October.

Our neighborhood's homeowners go all-out decorating their homes for Halloween, giving passersby simultaneous thrills, chills, and laughs.

Our subdivision is transformed into an enchanting or eerie wonderland, depending on your perspective.

Decorating and Entertaining

The proud homeowners in our community enjoy decorating and entertaining. The residents are never short on Halloween yard ideas to get their lawns and porches into the ghoulish spirit of the night.

The houses in the subdivision have various decorations ranging from hanging ghouls, fake zombies that look like they’re rising from the ground, spooky Halloween wreaths, witch brooms on the door, oversized spiders — you name it.

Popular Halloween themes are the haunted house and the frightening graveyard.

One of the neighbors has a holiday-themed light show every year with thousands of lights and haunted decorations. Their home is covered in numerous different spooky displays, including a huge skeleton, large inflatable creatures, and a laser projection.

The aforementioned neighbor pulls out all the stops for the big night to be the best in the neighborhood. Their yard is truly an impressive sight to behold. These same neighbors have the best front yard decorations at Christmas as well.

Halloween Block Party and Treats

Several neighbors organized a Halloween costume-themed neighborhood block party several years ago.

It was a terrific way to strengthen ties with the neighbors, not to mention the kiddos relished showing off their costumes at the party.

Every year, all our neighbors serve assorted Halloween treats such as Play-dough, pretzels, mini-games, and even hand out stuffed animals.

There is indeed a tangible sense of community and festivity here.

Our Family and Halloween

We were never big on decorating. I merely put out a few pumpkins and scarecrows in the entry every year.

For our family, it was always more about the fun of dressing up in fabulous Halloween costumes and attending Halloween parties and events. The kids’ costumes have run the gamut from classic costumes to Harry Potter to Disney.

I still remember accompanying them and their friends when they went trick or treating with a pang of nostalgia. Now that my children are young adults, they no longer partake in Halloween festivities.

Fortunately, I can still enjoy the holiday by passing out candy to all the cute little trick-or-treaters. I love getting to see how adorable all the kids look in their Halloween costumes.

We always dole out the full-size candy bars every year. We typically go through about five boxes. It is a pleasure to see the children ‘s faces light up with joy when they see the bars.

Everyone in our neighborhood really gets into the spirit of Halloween, making it a festive and fun holiday.
