Summary

The website content presents a poetry prompt from Haiku Hub inviting poets to express their identity through classic haiku form, with an emphasis on drawing comparisons to nature.

Abstract

The Haiku Hub has issued a poetry challenge titled "Haiku This! 'I Am'" which encourages writers to explore and convey their self-concept in the traditional Japanese haiku style. This involves composing three lines with a syllable pattern of 5–7–5, known as moras. The prompt suggests that poets use similes and metaphors to compare themselves to elements of the natural world, as nature is a central theme in haiku poetry. The website provides an example haiku and links to submission guidelines for those interested in participating. It also extends an invitation to new writers to join the Haiku Hub community and contribute their work.

Opinions

  • The prompt emphasizes the importance of descriptive language, suggesting that similes and metaphors add depth to poetic expression.
  • There is a preference for comparisons to natural elements, aligning with the traditional focus of haiku on nature and the seasons.
  • The website encourages community engagement by inviting new writers to follow the Hub and request to be added as contributors.
  • The prompt is seen as a way for poets to delve into self-discovery and share their strong feelings or connections with the natural world.
  • The inclusion of a comparison example serves as inspiration and guidance for poets starting their haiku composition.
  • The website acknowledges the recent contributors to the Haiku Hub and offers the option for writers to be tagged in future prompts, indicating a commitment to recognizing and involving the community.

Haiku This! “I Am”

Haiku Hub Poetry Prompt

In classic haiku form — 3 lines, 17 moras — tell us who “you are”

As poets, we find ways to reimagine and explain the people or things in our world by comparing them to seemingly unrelated things using similes, metaphors, and such. “She shone like the Northern Star” is so much more descriptive and appealing than “She shone brightly,” isn’t it? And, quite often, these comparisons help us to figure out who we are and how strongly we feel about something.

Tell us in three lines (or sets of three lines, each in classic 5–7–5 haiku form) your vision of “who or what you are” and why. We especially encourage you to compare yourself to something in the natural world, since nature and the seasons are at the heart of traditional haiku. Here’s a comparison to get you started:

As always, please follow our submission guidelines.

If you’re not yet a contributing writer at Haiku Hub we’d love to have you! Please read the submission guidelines, follow the Hub and request to be added by responding here. We’ll be glad to add you.
