Haiku — 0040: Deep
A swimming story.
Literally — Both in a pool and perhaps the tides of time.
On an endless swim,
Push aside fear of sinking,
Shallow to the deep.
Two days ago, I went to the open swimming after a whole year. And it was my first time swimming towards the deep end.
The actual depth was 2.2 meters, but the mental distance seemed far, far bigger. I was making slow, but decent progress in the swimming classes, so I had to take this deep dive (excuse the pun)
“Don’t think about the bottom. Think only about the other end. You can do this”
This would be my swimming instructor, also the lifeguard during that open session. He had to tell me this after I stopped short of the 1.6m depth, slightly short of my height. It was not the technique, but me, that had an issue.
But after taking a risk, I did it. And then I did it again. With each pass, the weight of my mind thinned slowly. The bad memory of slipping in the pool only to find no land beneath, and the few seconds of utter horror that came with it.
When I think about it, isn’t this theme larger than just a story about a swimming pool?
The idea of living, not surviving, definitely involves swimming with the sharks and jumping into the deep. At times, without much time to acclimatize to the change. The time of my first quarter in TU Deft was one such instance for me, and I am certain you have a story of a similar kind.
A journey into the deep.
