Gun Violence: Are We Just Going To Accept Senseless Deaths as The Norm Now?

Mass shooting after mass shooting. Increased death tolls. Children… murdered. WHY are there still no changes?

Time and time again, we hear of mass shootings on the news.

It’s become the norm now. And if you don’t agree with this statement… you’d have to be living under a rock.

I just spent the past hour reading news coverage on the shooting that took place in Texas.

At least 21 dead. 19 children. 2 adults — teachers.

Read that again.

21 dead. 2 adults. 19 children. Shot and killed. Children in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade. Murdered.

It makes me SICK.

I live in Australia.

And I CANNOT comprehend (I am probably going to get attacked for this but I genuinely do not give a shit) why it’s so difficult, for people to accept that harsher laws pertaining to gun control, ARE NECESSARY.

It’s a fact? Why is this even being argued?

Mass Shooting in Australia

Now, this article isn’t about “Oh, Australia is better than America”. Not at all. But… you may be familiar with what took place in Port Arthur, 1996?

A 28 year old, deranged man (he is not worthy of a name mention) strolled into a café in Port Arthur, and opened fire.

Using a semi-automatic rifle…

…He killed 35 people, and wounded another 28.

35 innocent lives lost.

John Howard, Australia’s prime minister at the time, made a decision that would change the course of history.

He believed that guns were too easily accessible. And that Australia had too many guns.

Sound familiar?

As such, a country wide reform took place. Peacefully and willingly, approximately 650,000 legally owned guns were destroyed.

In a 2018 study, Australia experienced 13 mass shootings before the Port Arthur massacre in 1996.

Since then, Australia has experienced zero.

These are STAGGERING figures.

Is Anything Even Going To Change?

The uproar after each mass shooting… the pleas for stricter gun laws… are they falling on deaf ears?

How many more mass shootings need to take place before changes are made?

BIG changes. REAL changes. EFFECTIVE changes. Changes that will NOT please all Americans.

But, will ultimately save lives.

These politicians have no heart. No soul. Their lack of action is a big fuck you to the children whose lives were lost.

They may as well admit to their truth: Our right to bear arms is more important than your children’s lives.

Thoughts?

Will we finally see harsher gun laws imposed? Why/why not?

I state the following with no ill intent: Now, I drafted this article around 1 week ago.

I submitted this to one publication and received no response for some time (they are generally extremely prompt with submission requests, posting within hours).

I found this odd. So I cancelled the request, and submitted this article to another publication. Again, no response (this publication is generally quite prompt in posting submissions too).

Again, this is NOT an attack on any publication. But I’m just wondering, has this happened to anyone else?

Is the topic of ‘Gun Control’, frowned upon? Do pubs not allow such posts?
