Guardian Angel
A short story about fate

“So you’re my Guardian Angel?!”
“Yes.”
“You’re supposed to help me.”
“Yes.”
“I was supposed to be back in time for the important meeting.”
“Yes.”
“First there was the flat tire — an hour to change that.”
“Yes.”
“Then the oil ran low and so I had to pull over…”
“Yes.”
“Then the road construction which stopped traffic.”
“Yes.”
“Then I got there and the brakes overheated and failed so I ran into the post causing some damage…”
“Yes.”
“Now I’ve missed it and the car and the needs to be fixed.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you help me?”
“You are blessed.”
“What?”
“Your brakes were completely worn. You had failed to service them. The flat tire allowed them to cool, so they did not fail. The oil change forced you to pull over, so again they did not fail. The construction forced you to stop, so again your brakes could cool. Then the brakes failed in a place where you were not hurt and the damage was little. You are blessed.”
